We had the good fortune of connecting with Lance Miles and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lance, how do you think about risk?
Growing up in the late 70s and early 80s, we were taught a simple formula: go to school, get good grades, earn a degree, find a career, save money, and retire. If you were lucky enough to get married and have kids, that was just the cherry on top.

In high school, I did okay, but I never really knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. I went to a trade school to become an electrician and worked my way up to project manager by my late 20s. By all accounts, I was successful. I’d gotten married and had a daughter—my personal life felt fulfilling. But deep down, I was miserable. Overweight, I’d stopped playing sports, found it hard to make time for exercise, and knew I needed a drastic change.

I wanted a career that was impactful and meaningful. So, I took a leap: I went back to school and pursued a career in health. I didn’t know exactly where it would lead me, but I eventually found my way to fitness. I wanted to get up every day and help others who felt as stuck as I did. My family was financially secure, but I still needed to take a big risk. We sold our house and moved in with my mother-in-law for three years while I chased my passion for helping others. My wife, a teacher, supported me in every way—marketing, picking up clients, and building our new business.

Before long, we had a thriving gym with a warehouse, offices, and classes running all day. In the mornings, I worked as a rehab therapist for a chiropractor, honing my skills and meeting people in need of help. Eventually, the gym needed me full-time.

Taking the risk of starting our own business connected us to the most amazing people—some of whom are now our closest friends and family. For 13 years, we’ve helped change thousands of lives. It’s been a blessing. All the late nights, financial stress, self-doubt, and, yes, even the rats (inside joke!) were worth it.

When we came up with the name “Redefined Fitness,” it wasn’t just about helping others redefine their lives—it was about redefining ours, too.

Risks can be scary. They can keep you up at night and make you question everything. But in the end, it’s been so worth it. I challenge anyone who wants to make a change to just go for it. With a great support system, it’s easier, but even without one, you’ll learn so much about yourself. If one door closes, others will open. Don’t be afraid to take risks—it builds character and pushes you out of your comfort zone. Muscles don’t grow without challenge, and neither do we.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Fitness isn’t just a way to stay healthy, look good and live a long live. It is also a way for us to express what our bodies are capable of doing. From the beginning of time, man has always found ways to challenge our bodies from building huge temples with no machines, hunting and gathering with no modern weapons and yet we continue to push the boundaries. Weightlifting, track and field along with many other sports, records are constantly being broken as we learn more about our capacity to move large loads long distances quickly.

It’s such an honor to be able to help someone reach a goal no matter how big or small it is. We aim to assist our members in those goals by teaching them technique, consistency and intensity. It must be in that order to ensure safety as well as yield results. I’m proud that our coaches take pride in what they do and how they relay the message to our clients.

The road to success for us started first by caring. If you don’t care whether or not your clients reach their goals then they won’t be clients very long. People wanna know how much you care before they care how much you know. If you can’t relay the message to them or understand first what their goals are then you’re doing them a disservice. I teach our coaches to put their needs in front of our own.

There can obviously be challenges with that because one thing you can’t teach is effort. You can show them all day long how to do something but the intensity or the effort they put in has to be on there. We try to over come those challenges by setting expectations early that that it’s going to be challenging, its going to be hard, but with a group of people its a lot easier to suffer when you’re in it together. One of our slogans is “stronger together”

I’ve learned that you can’t help everybody. We can’t expect ourselves from someone else. They have to want to and our job is to encourage, support and celebrate small victories. When they have the expectation that its small steps and we congratulate them on those small victories then its easier to keep them motivated.

Our brand represents a facility that is inclusive of anybody that wants to make a change in their life and you’re always welcome here with no judgment as long as you’re working hard.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Spring Tx is a small town just north of Houston. There’s still plenty to do here and we enjoy hanging out with our members outside the gym. At anytime you could find us grabbing a workout on an early Saturday morning, then maybe heading to brunch in creekside about 15 min away where theres a green space for kids to run and toss the football. Theres lots of local brewery’s with big screens to catch a game or even grab dinner. On any given Saturday we would invite friends over to the house to swim and maybe grill out and do some fishing in our lake. If we wanted to go out instead we would head to Hughes landing and go to the game spot which is a local game show you can participate in with a group of friends. There’s so much to do in and around the city that the possibility’s are endless.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Striving for success takes dedication, lots of learning about yourself and obviously your skill sets, but it also requires a lot of support from fiends and family. It also takes support of your clients because if we’re being honest, you can’t sell if nobody is buying.

First and foremost my savior Jesus Christ has been at the wheel then entire time. Through doubts, struggles, and the victories, we owe it all to him for opening doors for us.

My wife has been by my side, never doubting, and supporting me at every turn. She has been a true teammate and my biggest fan. She is fantastic with managing time, building relationships with clients as well as our systems and operating procedures. Without her I’d still be training clients out of a garage. I owe a lot of our success to her.

My staff has seen my vision since day one. They’re the backbone of our business and build the relationships with our clients on a much more personal level. From coaching classes, taking out trash, cleaning the gym, organizing events, theres a process to it all and when we go out of town we have zero doubts that things will run smoothly.

Our parents, at first, thought we were nuts but eventually saw the impact we were making and quickly not only supported us but helped promote us. They’re now currently members of the gym in their 70’s.

We couldn’t do any of this without the support of our members and their trust in us to assist them on their fitness journey. We have members still to this day that started with us in the beginning.

So to all of them, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
