We had the good fortune of connecting with Lane Fobbs and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lane, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
That a lot of comic book readers are older, ages 35 and up. This is tough when thinking about your business long term and it’s future health. It’s why I target much of my work at kids. They’re the future so I try to write things they are into.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a Black comic book artist who creates stories we don’t see much in our community. We have had endless serious films and TV like The Best Man or Power. I like putting twisted spins on trusted favorites like these to create something new. For example, my book “Becky” starts with the typical Black love story but then goes into a very different direction, giving audiences something unique.

My books are always met with a raised eyebrow at first but when people actually pick up and read them, they walk away satisfied and wanting more.

Along the way, I learned that in order to sell, you have to have a physical book and go and meet people where they are at. Sitting online all day isn’t going to help you grow. Get out in the real world and surprise yourself!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It would depend on if they like food or not. Houston is a hub of all sorts of restaurants. I would take them to Mo Betta Brews. It’s a great place for vegan food options. From there I would say spend a day at Herman Park (if it’s a nice day out) and hit the new look zoo and park train. You also can’t forget out going to the beach in Galveston which is just an hour away from Houston. Lot’s of history and unique places to visit in Galveston, such as the location where Juneteenth began. And last but not least, they HAVE to visit Gulf Coast Cosmos, the only black owned comic book store not just in Houston, but in the entire state of Texas.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My girlfriend Richland, who attends every out of town event providing an extra set of helping hands as I sell my books. I’m convinced some people buy just because she is her.
