We had the good fortune of connecting with LaNisha “Nini” Patterson, PhD and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LaNisha “Nini”, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Throw’d Off Entertainment, LLC consists of four Houston actors with over 10 years of experience; LaNisha Patterson (Nini), Antonio L. Vines (Stuntman), Paul Green (Blaze) and Christopher Clay (BDC AKA DJ Cut the Grass). Our purpose is to provide entertainment through the genre of comedy using various platforms. We strive to produce original, innovative, and creative content to keep our audience laughing, smiling, crying, engaged, and the list continues.
Throw’d Off Entertainment launched in 2019, and on April 12, 2020, received the registered LLC on September 2, 2020. We developed such a platform during the COVID pandemic to provide entertainment and comfort. Our primary goal is to provide quality films, short films, and skits while focusing on comedy as an entertainment company. We have recently expanded our company through the creation of the “Throw’d Off Crew” which consists of a diverse group of talented individuals ready to provide humorous moments to the masses. Our overall vision is to create a platform that cultivates a diverse entertainment community where art imitates life through comedy and the arts.
In addition, I plan to heal and inspire others through spoken word. After facing many challenges in my life, I began writing poetry as a way to release past pain and traumas. I decided to share my pieces through spoken word, in hopes of healing others.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My life is a beautiful canvas filled with vibrant colors. I have never been one to place all of my eggs in one basket, so there are many things I do, each with its own unique meaning. I am currently a CPRIT TRIUMPH Post-doctoral Fellow at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, in which I will be conducting research that will explore the link between pancreatic cancer and new-onset diabetes mellitus. When I was four years old, I was diagnosed with Type I Juvenile Diabetes. My diagnosis led to a series of events that led me to become a delegate for the state of Wisconsin for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s first Children’s Congress when I was eight years old. Of the 100 delegates chosen to go to Washington, D.C., I was one of only four that were chosen to testify before the Senate Appropriations Committee. During my testimony, I pleaded with Congress to allocate research funding for Type I Juvenile Diabetes to the National Institute of Health. I promised that if they did not support funding to find a cure, I would grow up and become a medical researcher and find a cure myself. That was twenty-nine years ago, and I still plan to keep that promise as my passion is to find cures for chronic and debilitating diseases through research.
During my Ph.D., I experienced several hardships including a divorce, losing my father, and going through the tumultuous time of COVID-19. During that period, the only thing that kept me sane was the arts. After I was casted in a stage production written and directed by my mother, Diana N. Patterson, I was able to identify another purpose and passion in my life which was the arts. I currently have an entertainment company, Throw’d Off Entertainment, LLC, with three of my closest friends in which our mission is to transform and heal our communities, raise social awareness, foster stories that heal the spirit, provide joy and laughter, and serve as a beacon of light in the entertainment industry through comedic acting. We have created various skits, comedy shorts, podcasts, radio show productions and have hosted events and conducted interviews with various local, national and international celebrities, including Big Pokey, DJ Chose, Propain, Big Daddy Kane, DJ Hi-C, H-Town, Kushy Simone, AD Green, Paul Anthony, Garfield of Shai, Stunna Bam, and various Ready to Love Cast members including Tony Stubbs and Jay Bradley. I also aspire to heal the souls of others by creating happy memories through spoken word. The arts allow me to create and heal through a universal platform. Overall, my goal as a creative is to heal. If I can heal others through the arts, I win.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am honestly a huge homebody, however, I do have a few favorite spots in Houston. I am a foodie and love eating. I love comfort food, so I would first take my best friend to Smashburger. Their burgers are amazing! We would then stop at Boudreaux’s Cajun kitchen for some Cajun classics and daiquiris. I would probably take us to walk some of that food off at Memorial Park and then end with a night of food and drinks at Grand Lux Cafe and a live comedy show.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many others that I must thank for the success I have had thus far. I want to give a huge thanks to my family, including my mother, Diana N. Patterson, my beloved father Myron Wade Patterson, my three amazing sisters, LaShawna Patterson, LaTine Patterson and LaToya Goudy, and the newest additions and blessings to my life, my almost two-year-old daughter, Alaysia Amani Green, my significant other Adrian DeWayne Green and my mother in love, Debbie Teal, There is no greater gift than a supportive family that supports you as you strive to become a greater version of yourself.
In addition, I have amazing friends. I truly want to thank three of my closest friends/business partners, Antonio L. Vines (Stuntman), Christopher Clay (BDC aka DJ Cut the Grass) and Paul Green (Blaze). Without these three there would be no Throw’d Off Entertainment, LLC.
I want to give a huge thank you to my childhood best friend, Vincent Wesley and best friend Kayla Rowe for all of the talks and encouragement that have helped me overcome many hardships.
Finally, I want to thank everyone who has encouraged me, cheered me on, and/or provided opportunities and resources for me to succeed in all of my endeavors. It truly takes a village.
