We had the good fortune of connecting with LaPorcha Whitfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LaPorcha, how do you think about risk?
Risk taking is my middle name. I think risk are taking the steps towards things that could possibly fail, but you believe in yourself so much that you still take those steps. I have taken risk in everything that I’ve done in my life. Specially in my career I believed in myself and knew that if I didn’t try how can I say I went for my dreams. I have left a great paying job to pursue Tv and I use every coin I have to pour into my book. Taking that risk has lead me to great success and I just want everyone to know you can do ANYTHING you put your heart to.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
At this time I am working hard to promote my new book Mama: The Broken Relationship Part 1. This book is very special to me because for the first time in my 32 years I wanted to be open and vulnerable. Not caring about judgment but about healing. I have used every barrier as a stepping stone to be where I am today. Many people would have broken if they had to experience some things that I endured in life. But I didn’t break, I stood firm in everything that I believed in. It hasn’t been easy at all. Financially, mentally emotionally, it all has weighed me down. But the only way I will be successful is if I fight for my dreams. I’ve also learned that everyone is not going to go with you to the next levels in life. Sometimes what God has for you is for you. I want the world to know that I’ve been hurting for a long time and releasing this book which has a Part 2 releasing late summer has helped heal me. I want to tell my story and help heal anyone I can. Man or woman, boy or girl.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend was visiting for a week we would be everywhere in the city. From hiking at the Memorial Hiking trails to having a day drink at The Address. I’m very spontaneous so I can’t say I will have the week planned out but I’m sure we would have some fun. I love to grab a scooter downtown from HtownSlingshotsandScooters and ride to different food trucks in 3rd ward and Montrose. Emancipation St is the best place to bar hop and check the Urban scene out. Food drinks and a lot of black joy going on. Houston has so much to offer and this is why I love my city.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out my Mama Linda F Guillory/Darrington. She is really the light of my life. We have been through so many things together. I admire how strong and resilient my mother is. I thank you Mama for working hard to provide for your children. I’d also like to thank my father Carl E. Whitfield May God rest his soul. My father was a great mentor and advice giver. He taught me how to be open minded and forgive. I dedicate my first book to both of my parents. I wouldn’t be me without them. I would like to thank God and the spirits of my ancestors for always watching over me and keeping me protected.
