We had the good fortune of connecting with LaQuita Barnes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LaQuita, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
I take the basic concept of making a list of pros and cons. If my cons outweigh, my pros, then I know it’s time to give something up. I also, do a check in with myself to see how I’m feeling mentally and emotionally. If I feel more drained, that is also a sure sign for me to give up. Because at that point, I know I’ve done all I can, and have given all that I can give. If things don’t seem to be helping me grow, then 9 times out 10, it’s hindering my growth.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I first started out as a blogger. It was my outlet from a stressful job. It was my creative fix that allowed me to let go of work and not have to follow rules when publishing a piece. I love the idea of taking my words, or anything from my imagination and painting a picture with it. I like the idea of creating something that allows a reader to escape their everyday life. I still get nervous when its time to publish a piece, and have the worries of whether or not someone may like it. But, what pushes me is knowing that my story or what I’ve written is my story and no one can tell me I’m wrong.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting, I would take them to social spots. We would visit the North Davidson area, and stop at a nice spot to eat. It would be a restaurant that is something different for both of us, and not an average food chain. Either something from a food truck, or a new restaurant that I more than likely would’ve stumbled upon via Instagram. Then, we would head out to hear live music. Good music is known to alter moods, so that will help keep the atmosphere light and fun. We would also do some local shopping.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my shoutout to my best friend, DeElva Dash. She is a fellow creative, entrepreneur, and photographer. She is always supportive, and is willing to give a helping hand, listening ear, or shoulder if/when needed. She also produces dope material.
