We had the good fortune of connecting with Larneka Lavalais and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Larneka, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process regarding starting my own business came in the form of fulfilling a need in the community. I wanted to reach the underserved in the community that were often overlooked. I wanted to do it my way. I wasn’t concerned about quotas or how much money I would bring in. I just wanted to help.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the owner of Larneka Lavalais, LPC PLLC. This is a mental health private practice. Services provided are: Counseling Supervision, Individual, Group, Family, and Couples’ Counseling. I facilitate support groups. All services are through Telehealth. I am a Motivational Speaker, and I facilitate trainings and workshops. Currently developing an online continuing education program, wellness retreats and life coaching.
I am very proud of my accomplishments. I built my practice from the ground up. No business courses, no how to start a private practice course, and no marketing experience. I believe my steps were ordered by God as I walked in my purpose. I used trial and error, with the help of friends and colleagues here and there. My mom would always tell me that I don’t have to prove anything to anyone, but “let the work you do speak for you”. Because of my work in the community, outreach, and mental health advocacy, that has helped my practice to grow.
I think the biggest lesson I have learned is to believe in myself. When I was working for a mental health agency, I did not believe it was possible for me to start my own practice. I was looking to partner with someone else, but God showed me that I had what it takes to do this on my own.
My mission is, advocating for change through education, conversation and empowerment. Through advocacy, my goal is to educate and empower others to make much needed changes in their lives to heal.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a self-proclaimed nerd that always enjoy learning. So one of the first spots would be the Museum District. Then check to see if LOC (Lesbians of Color), Keith and Dexter Presents, T.R.U.T.H. Project, Inc, or The Normal Anomaly Inc. are hosting any events. Whether its advocacy, activism, or a themed party, those organizations are sure to bring good vibes. We would have to go over to the Montrose Area to have lunch at my all time facorite Greek resturaunt, Niko Niko’s.
Because I advocate for holistic mental wellness, working out in nature is one of my all time favs, so if the weather is good, we would go for a 3 mile walk at Memorial Park. More self-love/self-care with a massage from my favorite massage therapist Jonathan at Massage Envy or have a Spa Day at Gangnam Spa Healing Paradise.
A little retail therapy is low key one of my favorite pick me ups, so if I am looking for a bargin we would head to the Harwin Shopping District. Otherwise, its Memorial City Mall.
I am a big kid at heart so we would also checkout Dave and Busters, Cidercade, or Puttshack.
For nightlife, perhaps a comedy show at Phil and Derek’s or explore bars and hookah lounges.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My late grandmother, Dorthy May Viltz aka Grandma Bummie. She has been my motivation to help others. My parents, Larry and Letha Lavalais for their support. My sister, Lachelle Edwards for always beliving in me and encouraging me. My cousin, Graylynn Viltz who serves as my Marketing Director has encouraged me to do more with my brand. There are countless others who have encouraged me, been supportive, and invited or created space for me to fulfill my purpose. Family, friends, loved ones and colleagues.
