We had the good fortune of connecting with Larry Choyce and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Larry, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting my photography business was driven by a deep passion for storytelling and a desire for creative freedom. Photography allows me to capture meaningful moments and underrepresented narratives, providing a unique way to inspire and connect with others. I saw an opportunity to fill a niche by focusing on culturally significant stories and creating work that resonated both personally and within my community. Building my own business gave me the flexibility to pursue projects aligned with my artistic vision while gaining control over my time and career direction. Despite the challenges of entrepreneurship, I embraced the chance to grow, not just as an artist but also as a professional managing marketing, client relations, and finances. Ultimately, my goal was to create a legacy of impactful work that reflects my values, fosters meaningful connections, and leaves a lasting impression.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
LeChoyce Photography, my art is rooted in storytelling—capturing the unseen, the overlooked, and the deeply personal moments that make us human. My work often focuses on Black narratives, with a particular emphasis on culture, resilience, and identity. What sets me apart is my commitment to using photography as a tool for empowerment and preservation. Whether I’m documenting the joy of a family gathering or the complexities of mental health through fine art, my goal is to create images that resonate on a soulful level.

One of my proudest achievements is a project funded by the City of Austin, where I focused on the experiences of Black Austinites at risk of cultural erasure. That body of work not only highlighted untold stories but also sparked important conversations within the community. Moments like these remind me why I do what I do.

The road to where I am today hasn’t been easy. Building a career in photography required resilience, countless hours of practice, and a willingness to embrace failure. There were times when I doubted myself, especially when trying to balance creative integrity with the need to grow a sustainable business. Challenges like securing funding, navigating creative burnout, and competing in a saturated market tested me. I overcame these obstacles by leaning into my community, seeking mentorship, and staying focused on the larger purpose of my work.

Some of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned include:
• Be authentic: Your voice and perspective are your greatest assets.
• Community matters: Surround yourself with people who inspire and challenge you.
• Adapt and grow: Embrace change as an opportunity rather than a threat.

What I want the world to know about LeChoyce Photography is that it’s more than a business—it’s a mission. My work exists at the intersection of art and advocacy, capturing images that spark dialogue, celebrate culture, and preserve legacies. My story is one of persistence, passion, and purpose, and I’m honored to share it through the lens.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting Austin for a week, I’d create a balanced itinerary showcasing the city’s vibrant culture, scenic beauty, and incredible food. We’d start by exploring the Texas State Capitol, South Congress shops, and iconic murals, followed by dinner at Uchi and drinks at The Roosevelt Room. Nature would take center stage with hikes along the Barton Creek Greenbelt, a swim at Barton Springs Pool, and sunset views at Mount Bonnell. We’d dive into East Austin’s artistic vibe, savor tacos at Juan in a Million, and enjoy cocktails at Whisler’s. A day trip to the Hill Country would feature Hamilton Pool, Jester King Brewery, and scenic wine tastings. Art and culture would shine at the Blanton Museum, Mexic-Arte Museum, and a live music night at Antone’s. Lake Travis or Lady Bird Lake would offer outdoor fun, followed by a Rainey Street food truck crawl. To wrap it up, we’d watch the bats at Congress Avenue Bridge, enjoy dinner at Loro, and reflect on the week’s adventures over brunch at Kerbey Lane Cafe. This itinerary perfectly captures Austin’s unique charm, creative energy, and welcoming spirit.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely! LeChoyce Photography wouldn’t be where it is today without the incredible support and inspiration from a few key people and organizations. First and foremost, my family has been a constant source of encouragement, especially during the challenging moments of building this business. My wife and children have been my anchors, offering unwavering support and understanding.

I also want to give a special shoutout to the East Austin arts community. Their resilience and creativity have been deeply inspiring, especially as we navigate the preservation of our culture amidst constant change.

Lastly, books like The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron have reminded me of the importance of staying grounded and trusting my creative process. This shoutout is really a mosaic of everyone who has touched my journey—thank you all for your love, wisdom, and belief in my vision.
