We had the good fortune of connecting with Latrice Sumuel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Latrice, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I was in the 5th grade, my teacher at the time had a sleepover for all the girls in my classroom, but she did not invite me and two other girls. The only thing we had in common was our skin complexion (dark-skinned). This particular situation crushed my self-esteem at a very young age, and I always felt like I had to water myself down to allow other people to shine because I never wanted to offend people or make people feel a certain way. This inspired me to create Unapologetically Becoming Motivational Speaker and Life Coach, to be the voice and reasoning for individuals who have unspoken and unheard trauma that has shaped and affected their lives at some point.
When we do not heal from our trauma, we can not be whole and developed for our future. This is very important as we evolve in life and become our true selves; it takes dissecting the complex and becoming aware of our triggers so we can be healthy and whole adults, which is vital to becoming a husband, a parent, a wife, a leader, and a friend.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m proud that I’m willing to tell my story and inspire others to find their purpose and passion and live. I became this person through my own scars. Losing a parent at the age of 25 is a devastating experience that I wish on no one. Imagine trying to grieve and still trying to discover who you are and having to become the mentor and shoulder for your own younger siblings. It was a heavy and very long journey. However, I continued to trust in God and made lemonade out of lemons.
Was it easy? Did I want to give up? Did I feel like a failure? Did I feel like it was fair? Was I my best?
Not, and this is what sets me apart; my heart desires to pour into people and help them find their path by being open and transparent and addressing the complex parts. This is what sets me apart from others because I want to see people win and become who God created them to be, and that is the true win when we can genuinely make room for others at the table and break chains so that we can see others grow!
Because I know how it feels to be rejected, alone, and lost, I know the true feeling of liberation, and that is who I am.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston offers a diverse range of activities and food options. Some of the best places to eat include Bungalow, Warwick, Craft Burgers, Lucille’s, M0-Better Brews, Trez Bistro/Wine Bar, Truluck’s, Taco Stand, and Food Truck Parks.
There are plenty of activities to enjoy, such as the Color Factory, the Cockrell Butterfly Center, Andretti Houston, ATV Rentals, Minute Maid Park for a baseball game, Discovery Green, Pure Noire Urban Wineries, 4 Gents Cigar Bar and Lounge, Kamp Houston, Lost & Found, and Adore.
Houston, TX, truly has something for everyone.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to express my gratitude to several people who have been instrumental in my journey. Firstly, I would like to thank my late mother for always nurturing and exposing me to the world. Secondly, I am thankful for the unwavering love and support of my family, and for my Bishop, Dr. Ethan Ogletree, whose teachings have helped me on my daily life journey. I am also grateful to my friends who have supported me through both the good and bad times. To everyone who has liked, shared, and supported my posts, I am truly thankful.
I owe a special thank you to my dear friend Candra Smith (APRN, MSN, PMHNP-BC), the owner of Bright Stone Psychiatry, for her invaluable assistance and encouragement.
Finally, I would like to thank my daughter for inspiring me to be the best version of myself, and my mentor and therapist for helping me heal and become whole and healthy.
