We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Biolo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laura, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born and raised in Padova, an Italian town about 30 minutes from Venice! In high school I participated in a student exchange program and spent a year in Kansas City, MO! After getting back to Italy and finishing my high school, I left for Germany. I worked for a year to save up for college and later moved to the Netherlands to attend Maastricht University. My love for traveling got me in touch with so many different cultures, people and foods! From a business point of view, the flavors I offer my clients are majorly inspired by the different things I tried while living in other countries! In a bigger picture, I believe my experiencing how citizens of other countries live, made me more open minded and generally more inclined to try new things and say yes more freely.

What should our readers know about your business?
A few years ago I made the decision to offer only custom cookies, and turn my bakery into a “cookie boutique”. While I was nervous I wouldn’t meet my customers expectations by removing most of the items they usually would buy, I was met with an even bigger excitement by so many other people looking for a cookie artist. I was able to hone in my cookie skills much better than I would have if I hadn’t stuck with only one medium. My business is now thriving tenfolds when comparing it to how it was years ago and, although there are still moments of uncertainty (especially with today’s economy), I learned how to manage it in a more productive way, how to create business opportunities from low sale seasons, and how to pivot when things weren’t going as planned.
Laly’s Bakery is now the only bakery in Houston offering over 50 different flavors of sugar cookies, because they not only have to look pretty, but we want them to taste just as good- if not even better!!! We specialize in corporate orders and have worked with many businesses throughout the past years, including ESPN, Amazon, United Airlines, Casamigos, Baylor University, and more! We also offer custom cookies for all occasions, private and public cookie classes, holiday gift sets, and business consultations for fellow small business owners, to help them grow and navigate life as self-employed!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I always love to find a place of home away from home, so I definitely have a few recommendations for some delicious Italian food here in the city! For breakfast, I would try one (or a few!!) pastry from La Sicilia Italian Bakery and Cafe in Montrose. For lunch or dinner I would enjoy a pizza at Piola (on the 29th of every month they also serve unlimited gnocchi!) For a nice dinner I would recommend trying Fiori (4315 Montrose Blvd), chef Alessio has a wonderful, authentic Rome menu.

I also really enjoy going for a stroll at a farmer’s market, my favorite ones to check out are Urban Harvest (on Saturdays at 2752 Buffalo Speedway) and Heights Mercantile (2nd and 4th Sunday at 714 Yale Street).

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I love my fellow local small business owners and can’t get enough time with them! This group of people have been the biggest support network and helped me grow in unimaginable ways! On the other hand, I also love seeing them grow and participate in every little success of theirs. It’s truly a magical thing to have them by my side while navigating life and business!
