We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Pulliam and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
How could brand photography help people? It’s an interesting question, one I wrestled with over the first couple of years as I built and scaled my business. After all, it’s just taking pictures. Or is it?
I’m a mother of three children ages 7 and under so, as you may imagine, I have a special place in my heart for fellow “mompreneuers.” I know what it feels like to be torn between the full-time pull of marketing your business AND being present for your kids.
But then something happened last December. I was in the middle of a brand photoshoot when my client made the comment, “I can’t wait to have this gallery. I’ll be able to schedule [social media] content for MONTHS and stop being so distracted [by this ongoing task] every day.” That was my lightbulb moment. It’s so much more than taking pretty pictures. I’m giving other entrepreneurs back their time by planning goal-oriented photoshoots and delivering carefully curated galleries. Yes we need to bring our marketing A-game but NO it does not have to run our lives when we can be strategic about it! I love playing a role in giving people their time back.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I remember the feeling of standing in a darkroom back in 2006 and realizing there is something truly magical about painting with light. At the time, I was not planning to do anything with this realization besides have a very enjoyable time obtaining a required art credit. But the funny thing about finding something that resonates with your artistic side is… you can’t just leave it behind. I obtained my bachelors and later a masters and have a very enjoyable profession as a Director of Christian Education (DCE) in a church. Despite a very fulfilling career, the draw to pick up a camera persisted.
So here I am, almost two decades later and with a much more advanced camera, utilizing skills that I honed in my profession as a DCE in conjunction with my passion as a photographer. My clients experience the benefits of working with a left-brained individual — organization, strategic thinking, communication, professionalism — combined with artistic skill in creating timeless, true color imagery for their family and business.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
– The Woodlands Waterway
– Market Street
– Paradigm Brewing (Tomball)
– The Tomball Airport diner
– Spring Creek Nature Center
– Sixty Vines for Saturday brunch
– The Woodlands Resort lazy river
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband is my constant encourager and favorite “group project” buddy. He supported me in starting my photography business half a decade before I would have without his encouragement. He carries the greater weight of our household, at times, to allow for the busy seasons that running a photography business demands (especially during fall portrait season and January brand photography season)! Three photography educators, in particular, have also greatly inspired my work — Kyle Shultz, Vanessa Joy, & Maddie Peschong.
