We had the good fortune of connecting with Leanna and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leanna, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
My family and I are from Trinidad & Tobago, the land of Steel Pan, Calypso and Carnival. Trinidad is a melting pot of cultures, and religion. Coming from a family of 10 (8 girls, and 2 boys), the necessity to be an entrepreneur has always been in my heart. After working 30+ years in corporate America, I was forced to retire due to dire health conditions. I took that opportunity to showcase my Trini Delicacies, Chutneys & Pepper Sauce.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Ky & Lo Co. is a unique Caribbean/American business who pride themselves in creating homemade sauces using fresh ingredients. What sets us apart from other condiment company’s is the unique flavors from all over the world packed in an 8oz. jar. Coming to America from a third world country, not having any family here, but the few friends that encouraged and supported me and my daughter and becoming a business owner is what I am most proud of. I am excited to share our Trinidadian flavors with the entire world. After overcoming all the obstacles in my life, my daughter, her husband and my grandchildren were the motivation to keep going. Nothing about this business has been easy, it has been very challenging, but nothing worth having is easy! Through prayer and the grace of God, I have overcome and will continue to overcome, NO is NOT an option. No matter how old you are NEVER give up on your dreams. I want the world to know, that no matter what you go through in life, as long as you are dedicated and consistent, you can and will achieve all you set your mind to.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my best friend to Lake Conroe, Kemah Boardwalk, Surfside, go drinking down Washington Ave. and Midtown.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to mention that I never gave up through the hard times, because I always had the genuine encouragement and inspiration from my daughter Leanna, and watching my grandsons Kyran & Logan growing up (hence our business name KY & LO), and really wanting to leave them a little piece of Grandma’s Legacy!
