We had the good fortune of connecting with LeShawn Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LeShawn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process I had for You’re Our Unity was how do I serve the greatest amount of people? How can I make a feeling a viable business? And what could I share with others to inspire them to be more loving and compassionate? When God blessed me with the mission of You’re Our Unity we were in a very dangerous and divisive time in the world, we still are, but at that moment I literally saw hate in the atmosphere; it was thick and suffocating. I prayed to God for guidance to heal the hearts of his people. All I heard was “YOU”, I did not believe I alone could save the world but I did know each one of us, “YOU”, taking the time to heal our past hurts and uncovering the best of ourselves daily, redefining the unconditional love within. “Y.O.U” could be the change in the world. I decided I needed to challenge myself and everyone else to Dare to be Y.O.U.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career in customer relations and communications afforded me the opportunity to travel the world and immerse myself in different cultures, growing up I was always surrounded by diversity, but it was so much more interesting to travel the lands of these diverse groups of people. Being exposed to different cultures has allowed me to not only see different ways of life but also compassion for all that are not as fortunate as I have been. At an early age I was attuned to the fact that people everywhere had the same hopes of safety and prosperity, love, peace, and pursuit for happiness and fulfillment. My connection to people enabled me to learn and appreciate the complexities in us all. Many people look to me to bring clarity, balance or an objective view in many situations being “the voice of reason” so to speak. This gift led me to pursue my dream of becoming a certified life coach. My desire and the ultimate goal, is to always be a caring ear and an inspiring voice, helping those seeking a deeper introspection. My mission is to grow the You’re Our Unity community one peace maker at a time.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When entertaining the people and bringing them into my world I would hit New York City, the lights and the energy in Manhattan are so intoxicating. The spirit of the people and the atmosphere evoke fun and artistry. I would hit a nice brunch spot in the village, so many diverse cuisines to choose from and the area is electric. After Brunch we would take a walk along the pier on the West side to burn off the liquor calories, taking in the city sites and the people. The visit to the city would not be complete without a trip down to the 911 memorial to honor those we loss. I would hit a few iconic shops like Macy’s on 34th street and if reservations were available Tiffany’s. As the day progresses, I would make it up to Central Park to take in the beauty of the landscape. Taking some time to rest on the lawn and be enthralled in stimulating conversation. As the evening hits we are headed to Harlem hoping we have our dancing shoes on we hit Corner Social on 127th street for some dinner and nice music. Once dinner is over you push that chair back and get on the dance floor shaking what your mama gave yaaaaa, just celebrating life with diverse people enjoying the soul of the city and the uniqueness in its love. The most interesting places I go will always have an element of uniqueness and diversity of the people. I frequent many places throughout the boroughs that pay homage to the locals and their culture. My friends are as diverse as the places I go and the city has everything anyone is looking for. Come, let me show “YOU”!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am blessed with so many supportive friends and family in my life, though my best friend, sister, my heart was the reason I finally took the leap and abated fear to pursue this journey. Sandy Cabrera has been my greatest cheerleader and business partner, always believing I could accomplish and succeed at anything. She was such an encouragement just as ambitious and extremely intelligent, we created SandWalker LLC for our many projects designed to empower the youth and spread love and unity throughout our community. Sandy unfortunately passed away and I knew I had to honor her by being courageous and finally pursue our dream. When I finally heard and felt my spirit tell me to move, I started taking business classes, going to seminars and reading self-empowerment books. “The Power of Now” had the biggest impact on me, as it literally made me identify with the ego within me, as well as balance my mindset which enabled me to find inner peace. I have always been a very loving and easy-going person, but this book relieved me of guilt and strengthened my mind, body and soul. Though I experienced a huge awakening through literature and self-reflection. I owe the highest honor to God for Blessing me with my purpose and allowing me to live out my passion.
