We had the good fortune of connecting with Leta Harrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leta, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Sometimes the work permits you to work more and sometimes it permits you to work less. It’s all about the thing that needs to be done at any given time.
When I first started out I was working all the time. I didn’t understand the concept of budgeting and saying no to projects that did not resonate with me.
No I choose things that I love and it requires a lot of my time and there is a substantial budget to complete the work.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am obviously a photographer as I’ve mentioned previously. I freelance so my range of work is everything from product photography all the way to action photography. As of late I’ve been more inclined to take on projects that offer more storytelling and I am diving more into wedding photography. I always get the question of how did I get where I am today and it’s simple: I just did it. And I have never said no when it came to taking on a job and in doing so I was able to learn what worked for me and one didn’t work for me . I have always pushed myself to learn and try new things especially when it comes to visual storytelling. I’ve learned that this is not an overnight process and that it takes a lot of self-love and awareness to give myself grace. I will never stop learning or being open to learning and what I want the world to know is that it is so important to do what you love but it’s more important to find and stay connected to your reasons of why you do what it is that you do.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is such a tricky question because I am ultimately learning the city myself. When I transition to Austin I had only been here for five months and then Cove it happened and I use my photography as a way to learn more about the city and of course driving for Uber.
You could potentially find me and my friend venturing to discover food trucks Which are scattered throughout various parts of the city. We would of course venture to downtown Austin to view different murals of the city. I have found in the places where you can find murals you can generally find good food or good entertainment. I would definitely take them around Burnet Road and East Austin. Both of these areas are where I like to spend most of my time because of the diversity in spirit of these pockets of Austin.
We would of course include some sort of hiking which would Be in any part of Austin since I’m still learning the various parts it would be some thing that I’ve never venture to before.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like dedicate this shoutout to first, my higher power. Yes, I do believe by the grace of my higher power I was given a very specific gift to be a visual story teller and share this gift with others. All praises to the most high.
Second, I would like to shout out my entire biological family. My daughters inspire me to enjoy doing what I love to do. My mother who firms forgiveness and showing me what sacrifice looks like. My four beautiful siblings who love me and support me unconditionally and make me proud to be their big sister. My aunt uncle and cousin Who continuously support me: I think of them as my cheerleading squad. My grandmother and grandfather who are no longer in there human form they are the ones who showed me the value of words and visual stories.
Third, my friends/ mentors who have become part of my extended family. They have supported me through a very groundbreaking transition.. these friends consist of those who have supported me in my hometown of Washington DC and the friends that I have acquired here in Austin Texas.
Finally, the people that I have met along the way that I enjoy my artwork. Without their support it would be very difficult to continue this journey.
