Meet Lexis Gil-Thomas | Yoga Teacher, Writer, & Mindfulness Guide

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lexis Gil-Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lexis, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
I believe many of today’s physical and mental health challenges can be prevented—or even reversed—when people realize the power they hold within to heal and live optimally. Yoga and Eastern practices helped me discover that power. Facing death multiple times taught me how to live fully, pursue my values, and create an inner environment where thriving—not just surviving—is possible. That transformation inspired me to help others do the same.
With FlowFitX, my mission is to empower people with self-awareness—the most powerful tool we have. Self-awareness allows us to hear our own wisdom, trust our decisions, and move through life with clarity and ease. I guide clients—through one-on-one work, classes, workshops, and retreats—back to feeling clear, embodied, and resilient. Together, we build simple, sustainable practices that support longevity in mind and body, whether someone is returning to themselves or seeking to age with less resistance and more vitality.
The “fit” in FlowFitX represents fitness that creates safety in the body: building joint mobility, preventing injury, strengthening functional movement, and cultivating nervous system resilience. The “flow” reflects the fluidity that arises through regenerative practices like yoga, meditation, breathwork, reflection, and inquiry. My approach doesn’t aim to reinvent wellness—it honors the proven wisdom of Eastern philosophy while integrating modern science to create practical, lasting practices for today’s world.
My mission is to help people reconnect with their innate ability to thrive—living with clarity, balance, and vitality no matter what life brings. I challenge the status quo of a world defined by disease, distraction and overstimulation by showing that there is a healthier, more authentic way to live. I guide people back to themselves—strong in mind and body, free from quick fixes, and empowered to live long, healthy lives. And when one person reconnects in this way, the impact ripples outward, uplifting families, communities, and ultimately, the world.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart is not necessarily what I offer, but how I listen, teach, and connect with people in a way that feels easy, authentic, and light-hearted. I’m funny, transparent, and genuinely care about people’s wellbeing, which makes 1-on-1 sessions both fun and especially impactful. Together, we create custom programs tailored to each person’s unique lifestyle and needs, helping them move past obstacles and experience transformation in ways that feel natural and empowering. I have strong listening skills, awareness, and intuition, which allow me to help people notice what they might not see themselves—small shifts that lead to meaningful change.
My journey to this work wasn’t straightforward. I explored multiple jobs, trainings, and paths, learning through trial and error what truly resonated with me. There were (and still are) times when the future felt uncertain, but I keep moving forward, guided by my values and a commitment to pursue work I love rather than settling for something uninspiring. In my perspective, hesitation is the only failure.
I’m very proud of how much I’ve grown—mentally, physically, and spiritually—and of staying aligned with my values no matter what. I’m also proud of the impact I’ve already had on those I’ve worked with, and I’m excited about helping more people reclaim their power, confidence, and clarity, showing them that the answers they seek are already within themselves.
The lessons I carry with me are simple but profound: keep life simple, focus on what matters, take consistent action, stay agile, and honor the wisdom of nature. Ultimately, my story is one of curiosity, courage, and commitment—to learning, evolving, and helping others thrive alongside me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting Houston, I’d show them the city through a mix of movement, nature, downtime, and really good food. We’d get coffee and pastries at Jane and the Lion Bakehouse, because the owner, Jane, is a friken force. She challenges the status quo of the current American diet and creates dishes and pastries that have zero seed oils or unhealthy additives. We would then likely wander through Montrose checking out galleries and some fun, quirky shops. Dinner would likely be at Kasra, one of my favorite Persian spots.
We’d definitely fit in yoga at Black Swan, The Atrium, Saha Yoga House, or YogaSix Creekside, climb at Momentum Gym, and spend a day hiking at WG Jones State Park, Memorial Park, or Brazos Bend to soak up nature. Maybe hit up the Improv if a good comedian is in town.
The week would be a mix of movement, mindfulness, art, food, and outdoor adventures, with plenty of room for spontaneous discoveries, laughs, and moments to just be and enjoy each other and the city!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m so grateful to Jennifer Carmack, my first yoga teacher and mentor, who showed me what it means to be embodied, authentic, devoted, and fully expressive. And to the MANY other teachers who guided me along my path, thank you. My husband, Justin, has been my foundation—his love, wisdom, and encouragement have supported every step of my growth. I also have deep gratitude for the people I met abroad living in Costa Rica, my family, friends, and nature itself, all of whom have shaped and inspired me. There are too many to name, but I carry immense gratitude and love for each of them every day.
