We had the good fortune of connecting with Lilian Bodunrin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lilian, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor is making sure that people are loved well. As a believer, this has been an anchor in my life and paved the way for me to use my passions, gifts, and wisdom in ways that are transformative and a reflection of Christ’s love and light. My doula business is no different. I desire for women to be empowered, encouraged and educated enough to fight fear with faith and facts. Statistics show that black women are 3 to 4 times more likely to die from a pregnancy related cause. Learning this has lit a fire inside me that will not be quenched until more women of color are loved, heard, and seen well enough to change these numbers.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
To be honest, it is still shocking to think about how far LiliDoula has come in such a short amount of time. I went into this field completely “green” with nothing more than a certification and zeal for empowering women. I had no idea that the business would flourish into the ministry it has become and I am extremely grateful. I cannot take any credit for where I am. I am the true example of what happens when you take a seed of faith and water it with each step. Starting this business has been one of the most challenging, yet exciting things I’ve ever done in my life. I had to walk into this field without much experience and knowledge. Becoming a doula was more important to me than making money and attending births so I knew that I needed to invest generously into it and the women I planned to serve. I had to make many silent sacrifices and get educated so that I could be a greater resource and advocate for my clients and anyone who reached out for support. I did a lot of listening, “failing forward,” and praying. I also had to overcome imposter syndrome so that it would not hinder what God is clearly calling me to do. I learned quickly that the best way to serve my clients is to be my authentic self and stick with my moral compass no matter how difficult it may be. This has been such a humbling journey, but also one of my greatest accomplishments to date.
Doula work is so fulfilling and I cannot explain how beautiful it is to witness life being brought into the world while holding space for the “birth warrior” and their family.
I hope that people know that my life is pure evidence of God’s favor and what happens when you “lean not on your own understanding.” (Prov. 3:5-6). When we look beyond ourselves and strive to love others well, we allow God to birth powerful things out of us that can transform generations. I hope LiliDoula Birth services is known as not only a business, but a ministry that believes in the power of equipping women and their families with holistic tools to flourish throughout maternity and beyond.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank Jesus, my amazing family, my pastors, my mentor, my friends, and everyone in the community that has supported my journey so far.
