We had the good fortune of connecting with Linda Withers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Linda, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
As a parent and now a grandparent, the most important thing I can do to impact my children’s lives is to be intentional about connection. I wanted my children to feel known and loved by me. So I embraced what they loved, learned how to engage in their activities, ideas, and dreams, and worked hard to get our connection back when broken. For every child, it required something different. Instead of harsh discipline and lots of rules, we stayed close as a family with open communication, so when something went wrong or unacceptable behavior occurred, we would lean in and find out what was going on in their world, causing them to act out. We always apologized when we were wrong. My goal was that if my children felt known in their family, they would go out into the world and find success because they knew they were enough.
What should our readers know about your business?
We create resources to empower people to find purpose, live powerfully, and build a beautiful and lasting legacy in their lives. After working on staff at a church for 25 years, we realized that if a person can tap into their purpose or their why, they will be motivated to do whatever it takes to fulfill their dreams or ideas. So we provide resources, training, or coaching to help them along the path. The most difficult part of the business has been transitioning from a church ministry to creating our own business where we could reach people outside of our church walls. This has not been easy and with the pandemic, our speaking events went to nothing. We had to focus on using Zoom to lead smaller groups. This made it possible to reach people from all over the world in one event. We also had to learn what our sessions were worth so we could price them correctly. When we worked for a church, we did events and spoke in the community for free since we had a salary. When we started our own business, many people felt like we should offer our services for free. We knew we had something people wanted and our time and wisdom were worth something therefore we learned how to charge accordingly. One important lesson we learned was that we must listen to our people about their needs. Simply coming up with great ideas will not be helpful to anyone nor will it grow our business/ministry if it is not something people want or need. We had to listen and learn what the needs were and create from that perspective. I believe we are unique because our goal is to encourage and empower people to find connections and purpose so they can let go of the things that are holding them back. When a person walks in wholeness, they have a much great ability to impact the world around them.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In the mornings, we might walk to our favorite coffee shop, Slowpokes then shop at Renovate, our friend’s small shop across the street. Dinners in the Heights would be on the list: Coltivare, La Lucha, and Porta Vino are some of our favorites where we are sure to run into friends. Right now the Van Gogh Exhibit is in Houston so that would be on the top of the list as well as attending a sporting event. The Houston Open, Astros Baseball, or Texans Football come to mind. If it was in February, we definitely attend the Houston Rodeo. We love the lake, therefore a day trip to spend the day on Lake Conroe out in the boat would be a must. If we had a full weekend, traveling to Lake Travis in Austin might be a must.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Stephanie Dickinson is my business partner and the power behind all we do. I wouldn’t be in business without her.
