We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Hughes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Liz, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I knew going into the mental health field that being in private practice was my end goal but I didn’t think I would be here so soon. With covid hitting in 2020 and telehealth becoming popular along with demand for mental health services, it made sense for me to take the leap and start a virtual practice. I wanted the freedom of working for myself and having a say in the types of clients I was able to work with. I had to challenge the myth that you needed to be in the mental health field for 10+ years before stepping out on your own and I’m glad I did.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Mind body therapy is a virtual mental health practice that focuses on serving minority women who have experienced trauma. As a Latina woman myself, I am grateful to be able to serve and deeply understand clients who have had similar life experiences to my own. Building a business is challenging and I feel like I am learning more about it every day. I am grateful for colleagues who think of me and continue to send referrals my way. I believe in doing the best that I can and recognizing when I am not the expert on something and need support.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend visiting Houston I would try my best to take them to my favorite spots in Houston

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Jessica Eiseman was my supervisor while I was gaining my licensure hours and helped me get a feel for private practice while working part time at her group practice, Ajana Therapy where she manages a team of wonderful therapists. Jessica is such a hard working mom, therapist, friend, writer, and the list goes on and on. I am so grateful for her mentorship and support then and now.
