We had the good fortune of connecting with Lori Matthews and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lori, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
I think it’s important to never give up, as long as you love what your doing and are passionate about it. I believe everyone has their time to shine in life, so you should always be patient and just make sure your doing at least one thing everyday to get you that little bit closer to your goals. I believe what you put in is what you get out even though it may not happen as quickly as you want, you should trust in your dreams and keep working hard till it begins to pay off. I personally don’t think about giving up even though I’m not where I want to be yet, I have a passion for makeup artistry and my brand that I created and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
What should our readers know about your business?
My career began when I started doing makeup clients in my house straight out of University. I built a successful business doing makeup and I brought in more income than all of my friends who had just landed a graduate job after their studies. I think the reason I gained success quickly in the beauty world was partially down to the growing popularity of makeup or ‘Instagram makeup’ on social media, but also due to my skills which I learned by practicing different looks every day, experimenting on my own face – which I found more difficult than the beauty gurus I would see on YouTube because I didn’t have perfect skin and I had hooded eyes. All of these little things led me to being a great makeup artist as I could make just a regular looking girl look and feel more beautiful than ever, as I knew how to deal with all types of flaws and faces. I realised I wish I started doing this a lot earlier. One thing I noticed when I was doing up to 40 clients a week, was that the price of strip eyelashes were crazy expensive. So in 2018 I started my own eyelash brand and called it Kake Cosmetics. I am OBSESSED with the branding, the packaging and of course, the lashes. I wanted to create affordable lashes with a bulk discount for MUA’s, but also the highest quality lashes. One of my main selling points is that the lashes are super lightweight and don’t get irritating after a long time on your eyes. In the past I always wanted to rip them off after a few hours, so I wanted to create a product that was comfortable to wear for long periods. I’m proud of my brand and I believe it has huge potential – I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Kake Cosmetics.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favourite place is LA – so if I could take a friend there to visit I’d take them to Catch LA for brunch and bottomless mimosas (duh) then a tipsy shopping trip. On another day I’d take them to Venice beach to cycle down the beach path & eat ice cream or milkshakes. My friend and I who have been to LA a lot together, always end up going to this bar in WeHo called The Abbey (lol), we ended up there I think 5 nights in a row once and have made a lot of local friends there. We loved going to the Beverly Hills hotel for breakfast, Pump restaurant for dinner and The Abbey or Motherload for drinks. I love hanging out with creative, like minded people. I always have the best time with people who I have the most in common with. Although I also think it’s important to meet people who are different so you can remain open minded and humble.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The person I give most thanks to is my mother. She deserves recognition for where I am today because she showed me that you have to work hard to get where you want to be in life, and inspired me to be a #GIRLBOSS
