We had the good fortune of connecting with Maddie Carpenter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maddie, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I grew up in Midland, Texas, and my dad was a cotton farmer. Agriculture has always interested me, especially because it roots back over five generations of my family. My first jobs post-grad were in specialty green (unroasted) coffee sourcing, which took me to producing countries, visiting farms and learning about the global trade of specialty coffee. My career was mostly focused on the upper echelon of supply, 90+ scoring coffees (this just means really tasty). Because I spent my time in the coffee business focused on the highest quality end of the spectrum, I think I’m also drawn to that in flowers…so I tend to like using heirloom and unique varieties for Golladay Floral. I think our clients really enjoy those the most.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
If I had to sum up my business into one value, it would be quality. I’m someone that doesn’t market myself too well. I’m horrible at talking myself up and making what I have seem better than it is. Offering a floral service that’s rooted in quality, I can be 100% myself and feel great about my clients committing to work with me. This starts with sourcing through partners focused on providing exceptional flowers and ends with having a well-trained team, including myself, creating artful designs for our brides.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First things first, we’d start the morning at Catalina Coffee. They are tried and true. After that, we’d do a run at Memorial Park, then follow up that hard work with some breakfast tacos from Azteca, a food truck on Main Street in the Heights. Lunch could happen at Loro, because yum. After an afternoon nap and maybe a swim at a pool (if you can find one), we’d finish out the day at Eight Row Flint, my favorite watering hole. A couple brussel sprout tacos and an old fashioned or two and you’ve got yourself a Saturday work remembering.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My dad! He was never the parent that pushed us to pursue traditional careers. He loved it when my siblings and I went down our own path. Whenever I started working in coffee importing (read niche), he was always calling to hear about my adventures and what I was learning. He passed away a few years back, but I think he’d be so pumped about me starting my own business.
