We had the good fortune of connecting with Maggie Segrich & Meredith Wheeler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maggie & Meredith, how does your business help the community?
At Sesh Coworking, our mission extends far beyond providing a physical workspace. We strive to make a tangible impact on our community and the world by creating a supportive and inclusive environment for underrepresented groups, including women, communities of color, the LGBTQ+ community, and mission-driven brands and nonprofits.
Through our commitment to nurturing professional growth and work/life balance, fostering collaboration, learning, and advocacy, we empower individuals and organizations to thrive. By offering a space where everyone feels heard, valued, and seen, we contribute to breaking down barriers and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Furthermore, by providing our members and their teams with the tools they need to excel, we not only support their individual success but also contribute to the advancement of their respective industries and communities. Ultimately, our goal is to inspire, uplift, and empower individuals to be their most effective and efficient selves, thus creating a positive ripple effect that extends beyond our walls and into the wider world.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Sesh stands out among other coworking spaces due to the meticulously crafted community we’ve nurtured. It’s not just a place to work; it’s a haven for the LGBTQ+ community, women of color, and everyone in between. Moreover, Sesh serves as a hub and lifeline for numerous non-profits, fostering collaboration and support.
What truly ignites our passion is The Sesh Foundation, our non-profit arm dedicated to providing grants to non-profits, community organizations and businesses owned by and impacting women, communities of color and the LGBTQ+ community. This initiative embodies our commitment to empower organizations that drive positive change.
Our journey hasn’t been a walk in the park. We started small, relying on grassroots support and gradually expanded our reach. When we did finally open the doors to our first location in February of 2020, the pandemic started not 6 weeks later, causing us to lose every single client. There were many days when we didn’t know how we would make it, but persistence in the face of a challenge has always been our mantra. We leaned on one another and every obstacle reinforced our dedication to supporting our community, nonprofits and other mission-focused organizations.
Through this journey, we’ve learned invaluable lessons. We’ve come to understand that adaptability is key; what worked yesterday might not suffice today. But above all, our biggest takeaway is the power of community. We firmly believe that progress is a collective effort, and Sesh exemplifies the strength found in unity.
In essence, Sesh is more than just a workspace; it’s a testament to the transformative power of community-driven initiatives.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Eat:
Start with lunch at the Conservatory in Midtown. A food hall offering a diverse array of options and premium music events during happy hour and on the weekends
Drink:
Kick off Wednesday night at Axelrad Beer Garden, an outdoor bar offering a live Jazz band, market, steak night and refreshing cocktails that can be enjoyed by relaxing in their hammocks.
Visit:
Explore the Project Row Houses, who occupy Houston’s Historic Third Ward, one of the city’s oldest African-American neighborhoods. Their site encompasses five city blocks and 39 structures that serve as a home base to community-enriching initiatives, art programs, and neighborhood development activities.
Hangout:
Vibe to great music while supporting local musicians by checking out one of Wonky Power’s free concerts – https://www.wonkypower.com/
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce! We have worked closely with the Chamber for many years and would not be where we are without their support. Their impact on the city and it’s LGBTQ+ business community is a true inspiration.
