We had the good fortune of connecting with Mariam Albishah and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mariam, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Art comes in all shapes and sizes and I think the work I do narratively, I want to be the most authentic version of those characters. The ability to put myself in the shoes of someone with a completely different perspectives and very different way of being. It’s the same thing when you paint. There is a beginning, middle and end from the initial brush stroke to the many layers of complexity or simplicity that happens during the process and then the end where you get this sense of immense accomplishment. Realizing along the way that there is a story here. It’s Expressing vulnerability.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have always wanted to do something in the world of make believe. I was wildly imaginative as a kid. I had Created worlds I’d escape to when things would get overwhelming or just difficult. I was shy and observant and just didn’t know how to express myself. I had always told myself the minute I had an open window to do this in some shape or form to take the chance. I was moving back to America after living in Jordan for a little while and I then joined the theatre department. It’s definitely hasn’t been easy starting out but I think I was just so grateful for any opportunity, it all felt like a dream come true. i’ve learned that you can’t be too focused on what or how anyone else is doing it, when really there is no “right way”. trust your instincts.
I want to continue to do work that’s authentic and obviously meaningful whatever that looks like.
I also want to branch out and do things outside of the box. something challenging and interesting.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is one the biggest hospitality cities in the country. Definitely would take them to the classics. Tex Mex perhaps. some Vietnamese. Tiny Champions or Nancy’s Hustle for a nicer dinner. I think Houston has one the best museum districts from my experience. Very lucky to be surrounded by so much history in all these different ways through these collection of museums. I love the James Turrell Twilight Epiphany Skyspace, it’s so cool to witness. Rothko Chapel and the Menil in the heart of Montrose. There is this place called speedy’s fast track a little outside of the loop, and you can go go-carting and play games and rack up tickets, it’s a lot of fun.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have had some wonderful friends that have pushed me to be who I am today and how I look at the work I do. My coworkers at Catalina Coffee are very supportive about all of it. My very first Coach, Deke Anderson in Houston where it all started. Deke guided me and helped me grow when I had no idea what I was doing. He took a chance on me and believed in me and resulted in signing with my agents. To all those who have advocated for me in the industry such as Kate Phillips who I had worked on a recent film project coming soon, She has been such a light and very supportive.
