We had the good fortune of connecting with Mariam Kamara and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mariam, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Mix it Media came from this desire to lean into everything I love and take a chance on myself. I’ve always been passionate about creating—whether it’s curating the perfect social media feed, exploring new destinations, or sharing stories through my blog. I knew I wanted the freedom to do what lights me up while helping others grow along the way. So I thought, why not build something of my own?
With a background in education and applied behavior analysis, I’ve spent years helping people reach their goals. The skills I developed—like planning, structure, and intention—naturally carried over into social media management. I love taking a brand’s vision and bringing it to life in a way that feels authentic and resonates with their audience. Mix it Media became a space where I could connect with people, build meaningful relationships, and create something lasting.
It’s not just work for me—it’s a lifestyle. I wanted the flexibility to travel, explore new things, and inspire others to live boldly. Whether I’m developing a content strategy for a brand or immersing myself in a new culture, everything I do reflects the same core goal: to create, connect, and leave a bit of magic wherever I go.
Starting Mix it Media has been one of the most fulfilling decisions I’ve ever made. It’s given me the freedom to live intentionally, embrace my creativity, and align my work with who I truly am. And honestly? This is just the beginning.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career as a Clinical Advisor focuses on supporting candidates placed in school districts and collaborating with clients worldwide. What sets me apart is my ability to balance the people-centered side of my work with the operational demands that come with running programs smoothly. I don’t work directly with students but instead empower educators and professionals to make an impact in their districts. I love blending strategy with empathy, making sure both the business and human elements align to help schools thrive.
Getting to this point wasn’t easy. Balancing work, my business, and life often felt overwhelming, but my faith in God has been my foundation. His guidance gave me the strength to keep going even when things were tough. I also wouldn’t be here without the love and encouragement of my mom, boyfriend, family and friends—they’ve lifted me up every step of the way.
One lesson I’ve learned along the way is that success takes patience, consistency, and staying true to what excites you. That’s why I launched Mix it Media—to have a space where I could connect my professional skills with my passions for creativity, storytelling, and travel.
Ultimately, I want the world to know that my journey is about creating meaning and leaving a lasting impact, whether it’s through the candidates I support, the districts I collaborate with, or the brands I help grow. Everything I do reflects my belief that when you align passion, purpose, and hard work, the possibilities are endless.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Exploring the city and eating at the best restaurants? That’s literally my thing—I’m known for it. We’ll kick things off with brunch at Joey Uptown to enjoy great food and even better vibes. Then we’ll head to Art Tech House, where we’ll not only take in immersive art but also sip on some of their really cool, creative cocktails.
Lunch will be at Blue Sushi Sake Grill—my favorite sushi spot of all time. In the afternoon, we’ll dive into The Galleria for a shopping spree. Dinner? We’ll indulge at Bludorn for some upscale dining that never disappoints.
Midweek, we’ll unwind with a spa day at Milk + Honey — think massages, relaxation, and luxury. Afterward, we’ll grab cocktails on the patio at Mary’z, soaking in the chill vibes with music and hookah. For nightlife, we’re dancing to Afrobeats at Aura, where the energy is unmatched.
If there’s a food or drink festival in town, we’re there—Houston’s festival scene is always a vibe. And no trip is complete without a perfect steak dinner at Steak 48 to round out the culinary experiences.
We’ll wrap the week with brunch at Le Colonial, enjoying those elegant French-Vietnamese flavors. Every day in Houston will be filled with great food, art, music, and unforgettable memories—because that’s just how I do it.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, I have to give all the glory to God. He is where my strength comes from and the reason I’ve been able to push through every obstacle. His guidance has kept me centered, and I’m beyond grateful for the ways He’s opened doors for me that I didn’t even know were possible.
Beyond that, I owe so much to my people—my mom, my boyfriend, and my closest friends. My mom has been my rock from the very beginning, always encouraging me to dream bigger and never give up. She’s shown me what it means to move through life with grace and determination.
My boyfriend is my biggest supporter. He cheers me on through every step of the journey, celebrates my wins, and helps me stay grounded when things get overwhelming.
And my friends? They are my biggest hype crew. They’ve been by my side through it all—brainstorming with me, sharing laughs, and lifting me up whenever I needed it. Having a circle of people who genuinely care makes all the difference.
Every bit of my success is a reflection of the love, support, and faith that God and these incredible people have poured into me, and I wouldn’t be here without them.
