We had the good fortune of connecting with Marissa Mix and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marissa, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I decided to start my own photography business because I wanted to be my own boss! For example today I am working at a cute local coffee shop in my city. I love being able to make my own hours, and work when and where I want too! I am also young and do not have any children right now, so I figured that now is the time to take a risk in my life and launch my own business!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a wedding and family photographer! My photos are warm with a hint of mood with film-like twists. I love capturing candid moments that make my families and couples smile. There’s nothing like sending off a gallery and seeing a couple immediately start proudly posting all the photos I had the honor of capturing. I love capturing those little winks, smiles, and touches on a wedding day or family session. Those faces and moments are what matter to me, and I pride myself in capturing those moments beautifully.
I was able to start my business and launch full-time because of my diligence with my finances. I make sure to keep a budget, and stick to it. Being in a freelance business means that you have a sporadic income, so you can’t live paycheck to paycheck like most americans do. So to be successful, keep your impulse spending in check.
In client building, I have been super blessed to have a lot of clients come through family and friend connections. Word of mouth is king in the wedding world! I am also a part of a ton of bride to bride facebook groups. Those are a great way to start building a client base and portfolio if you’re first starting out.
My business has had a lot of changes, but I have also had a lot of changes personally. I originally went into wedding photography as a husband and wife team. I left the industry during my marriage because I was trying to run a business with a abusive spouse, and that just wasn’t working. Eventually, I left my ex-husband, got a divorce, and now I run a photography business all by myself!
Working for myself again after all the personal turmoil I experienced has been so healing. It has reminded me of how strong and capable I am. That my creativity and my work is valued, not just by myself but by my wonderful clients as well. Us humans truly are resilient beings.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For Houston:
If you’re in town you gotta check out the Houston Museum of Fine Arts! It has amazing pieces of work and great photo opportunities. I’m a huge art nerd because I was a studio art major at SHSU. (Eat em up kats!) I would also recommend herman park! Its so beautiful, and as a photography it truly is a dream place for an engagement shoot. To eat I will always eat waaaaaay to much at Papacittos or Papaduexs. Both of those establishments are way too good.
For San Marcos:
You gotta go check out the river! Sewell park is so cute and a great place to play some sand volleyball or sunbath. To eat brunch I definitely recommend Texas Bean and Brewhouse. It’s so cute and the food and drinks there are great! The night life is also super fun in San Marcos too. I love going to the Davenport pretty much any day of the week! They have a great outside sitting, tasty drinks, and live music! Monday’s are Jazz night and Steak dinner, Wednesdays are karaoke, and Thursday’s are Salsa night. If you’re into dancing, not too far in Buda you can hit Mavericks and two-step your heart away.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family has always been supportive of my creativity and innovation. I have always been an artist from a very small age and go against traditional forms of work. So it wasn’t a big surprise to them that I went full-time into my photography business, and my wonderful mom shares my photos all the time on Facebook! Mom’s are great for things like that. I also have so many supportive friends. My best friend Beka and her husband Chris are expecting a baby boy this month (December), and I am their birth photographer! I haven’t ever photographed a birth before, and their trust in me is so sweet. I also have the most supportive church: The Well in San Marcos. They are truly the most loving and supportive people out there, and were pinnacle in encouraging me in my photography skills! So many times I have been in a church members living room and they want to see my latest wedding or engagement gallery and gush over each photo with me. They are truly the best.
