We had the good fortune of connecting with Markierra Dixon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Markierra, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite affirmation is “Do what makes you happy”! When I first seen it, I instantly changed the lower case “you” to all caps, to truly emphasize the importance of living your life the best way YOU see fit and not for anyone else. Regardless of who it may be. To me, the affirmation simply means doing what feeds your soul because at the end of the day whatever decision you make you will be the one living through it, not the person that made suggestions and/or wanted you to go their route.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Before I became a signed model, I was an aspiring model but I would say I was always a model at heart! My interest for the camera has always been there but It didn’t start to peek until middle school. That’s when I got my first digital camera and no one could tell me anything! Not even the mirror!

What sets me apart from others is my sincerity and genuineness. Although I’m still “new” to the industry, I’ve noticed so many times a lot of other creatives will only interact if they feel you can benefit them in some way or you already have some sort of clout. I’m in it for the long haul. I value relationships and qualities of a person, rather than what they can do for me. Don’t get me wrong, opportunities arising because of who you know is cool and all but having a true friend in an environment like this is imperative.

I’m most proud of the constant growth. Every-time I look at my portfolio I can instantly see the growth whether it was from May of this year (When I really delve into building my portfolio) or last week. I always notice the small things and it makes me very happy to see my progress! With that being said, I’m excited to see what’s in store for me as I continue to climb the ladder.

I got to where I am by taking risks! I’ve always wanted to be a signed model but I always thought it was a hard process if you weren’t scouted. The year of 2020 I researched a few agency’s I would be interested in signing with and I chose the one that best suited me and didn’t look back! The steps were easy, from meeting with the representatives at the agency to attending a 4 week coaching. It was all a great experience! To me, it was very easy and exhilarating! What isn’t easy is maintaining patience sometimes. We all want to get booked 24/7but unfortunately that isn’t how it goes, which can lead to frustration, anxiousness and a plethora of other emotions! In this line of work, it’s important to not undermine yourself or your capabilities based on prominent fashion figures. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned that we’re all unique in our own way and we each bring something different to the table. It has helped me through a lot of things. Especially when it comes to being my authentic creative self!

I want the world to know that even if they choose not to support me, I will still thrive and I will surely be on a timeline, billboard, or in conversation nearby (:

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend came to visit Lexington KY the first thing we’d HAVE to do is eat lol. I would take them to my current favorite restaurant called Sav’s! It’s owned and operated by a West African Native. The food is so good and comforting! Now, seeing as the trip is a week long we would certainly have to come back. I would take them to some of my other local favorite restaurants as well because I absolutely love local things (Shops, Restaurants, Creatives, etc). KY has a few good areas to hike like the Red River Gorge or if we wanted something smaller, the Pinnacle would work! Downtown is always fun! Even if there isn’t something going on there’s a few good places to check out or just sightseeing. In my view, some of the most interesting things to check out are the local restaurants or events that go on or going to various thrift shops! You can never go wrong with thrifting…Right?

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Oldest Brother! He doesn’t miss a beat and has supported me in any and every avenue I’ve chose to explore from the very beginning! When the odds are against you or you feel like no one is in your corner, it’s always reassuring to know at least one person is there.

A few of my family members, two or three of my friends and complete strangers deserve credit as well because they’re very consistent and constantly pouring love into me and my art (photos) and that certainly goes a long way!
