We had the good fortune of connecting with Martha Beaudry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Martha, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Embracing my independent spirit, a personality test in my mid 30s nudged me towards the intricate world of sales, specializing in technology training and consulting. While I thrived in selling, the frustration brewed in the realm of delivery, where mismatched standards jeopardized client satisfaction. I became the firefighter, adept at extinguishing problems, but my desire was to create fewer flames and leave clients with a positively unforgettable experience.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Facing a crossroads in my career after closing the door to technology sales, I found myself torn between two intriguing paths. On the one hand, the allure of selling Porsches, a product I passionately adore, beckoned. Yet, their vulnerability to economic changes gave me pause. On the other hand, there was Real Estate, a realm where I could don the hat of a consultant for my clients while also having a significantly more control over delivery of service. Opting for the latter, I embarked on a journey with dreams of not just unlocking success in real estate but also envisioning a future adorned with not just one, but perhaps two, or even three Porsches. One can always dream, right?
My career weathered a financial crises, hurricanes, an IRS audit, and a pandemic, all leaving their mark on my business. Yet, the most profound lesson unfolded when I built my house. Amidst the challenges, I had to seize control from my General Contractor and complete the project myself. Navigating these trials cultivated empathy for clients, transforming me into a resilient advocate whether guiding them through buying or selling.
Real Estate really is a realm where uniqueness reigns supreme, as every transaction mirrors the individuality of the people involved. While processes march to a familiar tune, the magic lies in the distinct details. Building my own house refined my ability to listen, infusing purpose and empathy into client interactions. Armed with a strategic approach, my clients don’t just witness transactions; they experience the tailored approach of my expertise.
Since 2008, my tagline, “The Care You Expect, The Results You Deserve,” encapsulates the philosophy of my client-centric values.
Was it easy?
I was lucky as I came into this with a tech-savvy background, giving me an early edge in leveraging the internet for real estate marketing—a trick most Realtors hadn’t caught onto at the time. Within a swift three years, I attained independence, and started my own brokerage for a successful decade. The whirlwind of activities eventually led me to another crossroads, prompting a move to a larger firm where a treasure trove of valuable resources awaited, allowing me to improve my value to my clients.
What else sets you apart?
What I love most about this profession is its flexible schedule, which frees me from the confines of a 9-5 routine. Working both from home and the office enables me to intertwine essential activities, and one of my passions is fostering animals. Houston’s stray animal challenge hits close to home in my community, where animals are often abandoned. The struggle is real; many don’t grasp the importance of spaying or neutering pets, fueled by economic or cultural factors. Recognizing my limits, I joined Rescued Pets Movement (RPM) in 2021, fostering over 100 dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens. My focus now lies on nurturing puppies with Parvo, contributing to a well-oiled rescue machine that efficiently moves animals from BARC to Colorado.
Beyond my real estate endeavors, my flexible schedule opens doors to political engagement. Serving as a Federal Political Coordinator for Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia, courtesy of the National Association of Realtors, has been a dynamic role. I find myself at the intersection of advocacy, championing property rights and addressing homeowner concerns in my community. It’s a unique blend where real estate meets the political stage, and I’m honored to be in the center of the action.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I really love food, and I think Houston has just about everything one can imagine from Greek, to Ethiopian, to Peruvian cuisine. Anytime someone asks me where they can find good food and great atmosphere, my answer is “Just about anywhere in Houston! If anything, you have to hunt for the bad ones.” And what’s even sweeter, is that you can find good cheap food, too. And don’t get me started on our Bar B Que and steak restaurants! Houston knows how to do that, too.
Our museum collection is also quite impressive and worth several visits.
Here’s an interesting tidbit: Did you know that Houston’s theater district ranks 2nd in the U.S. (right behind New York city) for the number of theater seats in a downtown city? We love our performing arts!
I tease newcomers sometimes and tell them the city’s tunnel system is like the catacombs in Paris….but then, of course, I let them know it is a very intricate system that allows one to walk from one end of downtown to the other without ever having to expose themselves to the heat of summer. Not sure it would be fun to visit for some, though, I did have a client want me to take her through the tunnels.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Reflecting on the profound influences in my life, one figure stands out—Ayn Rand. Often misunderstood, her literature, a treasure trove I’ve fully explored, equipped me with the tools to forge my unique path. Rand’s philosophy, particularly emphasizing integrity, laid the foundation for my value system.
Within the Real Estate community, I find inspiration in those who transcend the label of mere professionals. They morph into educators, political advocates, and true servant leaders. I’m constantly working to emulate these industry titans, integrating their qualities into my own journey as a Realtor.
