We had the good fortune of connecting with marti ewing and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi marti, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always had an entrepreneur spirit. I enjoy all the creativity that goes into creating a business and never been too afraid of taking a risk. In fact, I had a few businesses before opening my private yoga practice. I went in with eyes wide open. It is not always the easiest path , but I find satisfaction from not only doing what I love but doing something that helps others so much! After working for about five years in Medical Sales , marketing pharmaceuticals and pain devices to physicians that work primarily with pain patients I began to wonder if there was not a better way, I saw many patients suffering from addiction and the vicious cycle of pain. I ask myself what if people could address the pain response in the body in a different more wholistic way. What if people could improve their everyday life through creating good habits and how could these people create good habits? I was familiar with the ancient practice of yoga and began reading more and more about yoga and pain studies , in India. I became very interested in learning how to work with special populations and through a study of nutrition, Recuperative Yoga and strength building I was able to put a program together that was working well for my clients.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own a private yoga practice in San Antonio Texas. I teach private clients and soon will have a small, boutique studio opening on the East side of town. I do in person and virtual classes as well as workshops and beautiful retreats. I also offer cooking lessons, nutrition counseling and I have a very special line of Therapeutic Lavender products I have developed. I do teacher trainings and am certified Yoga Therapist. I teach Recuperative Yoga which is a type of yoga specifically developed to those recovering from illness, injury or and kind of imbalance in mind or body I was a pioneer in Integrative Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and currently work in the Veterans Administration in San Antonio as the first full time Yoga Therapist. I achieved this position through hard work, networking , being wiling to do things others may not have been and always following my life mission . My mission is to bring yoga to those that might not be ale to thrive in a main stream practice. I created my niche by getting my foot in any clinical setting that would allow me to teach . Perseverance and focus on my mission made this easier but it was a challenge to offer a program to institutions that had never offered yoga as a healing modality before. I have learned it is the people in the institutions that believe in you that can help you achieve your goal. I was never afraid to talk to people about Yoga because I knew the power yoga and the meditation aspect of yoga to bring people mind and bodies into balance.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am new to San Antonio and still discovering things daily . One of my most favorite parts of the area is the Hill Country. I love to paddle board , kayak and hike. We would go to one of our beautiful water ways, Enchanted Rock and scenic drives through the Hill Country. My guest would say in my studio which is also a future spa Ari B&B so my guest would enjoy my Frida Kahlo inspired décor and long nights on my patio under the moonlight. I take most guest to La Fonda one eve for some fancy cocktails in the beautiful courtyard under the trees.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shout out to my mentor and teacher Julie Byrd, 500 RYT who taught me the most important lessons in how to teach special populations and encouraged me to cultivate an understanding anatomy so that I can be well equipped to help those that need it. Through this understanding modifying a practice for all individuals , even those that are compromised can bring over all well being into peoples lives.
