We had the good fortune of connecting with Mary Hooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mary, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Throughout my life I have experienced many difficult situations. Some of those situations I had no control over but most of them I allowed to happen to me due to my poor decision making. I knew that if my poor habits and decisions had held me back from becoming a better person and experiencing a life that is more peaceful and fulfilling, then there had to be others that were struggling with this as well. So through prayer and obedience God gave me the idea to become a life coach; helping women that are tired of going in cycles break out of autopilot so they can become the best version of themselves.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a life coach, author, and speaker; I help women break out of life’s overwhelming cycles by using my own experiences. I help them become the best version of themselves by using the lessons I’ve learned along my own journey. My story is not pretty and no it was not easy at all. As a young girl I suffered from low self- esteem and lack of confidence; that led me into people pleasing and further destruction. At the age of 15 years old I became pregnant with my daughter, I then turned to drugs/alcohol, I got involved in prostitution, and shortly ended up in domestic violence situations. Through God’s grace I was set free from it all. I am an OVERCOMER! Although I was delivered from this lifestyle there was work that I had to do to create a new life.

Self reflection played a huge part in creating a more peaceful and fulfilling lifestyle for myself. Along the way I have learned that you have choices in life and the choices you make affect your life for the better or the worst. I’ve learned to trust God; obey, take risk and invest in myself.

My passion for coaching women, public speaking, and writing comes from understanding the struggle of wanting better out of life but not knowing how to get to it. Through my authentic and transparent approach I meet women right where they are and challenge them to go higher. I stand on this statement: “your past doesn’t determine your future, you too can overcome.” With that being said I help women break free from the victim mentality so they can become victorious! This is done through my coaching program where we dig deeper into self reflection. It gives me joy to see women remove the labels and limits that keeps us from experiencing a life that is peaceful and fulfilling.

My latest project “the NO MORE. series” can be found on my YouTube channel sheOVERCOMER (SUBSCRIBE & SHARE!) I interview people from all over the world that have a story of overcoming an area or obstacle in their life. It brings me great joy to hear the stories of others that have been through some tough experiences but they did not allow it to keep them stuck. These amazing people that I interviewed decided to say NO MORE to those things that were sent to destroy them and overcame. Each interviewee tells the practical steps they took to come out of that situation. The whole purpose of the NO MORE series is to give our audience hope that no matter what situation you maybe in you too can overcome!


The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout my personal Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who has keep me through it all. Everything I have accomplished is because of God’s grace and love for me. I also would like to shoutout my beautiful children Nevaeh Gardner & Alex McDowell Jr; they are my biggest motivation and always encourage me to keep going. Lastly I would like to shoutout every person/mentor/pastor that has spoke life into me and even prayed for me. It has been too many to name but just know you are appreciated.
