We had the good fortune of connecting with Mary Jane Segura and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mary Jane, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
During Covid many of our music artists, songwriters, and personnel were dying. Many families reached out to see if I could help locate information on royalties, digital platforms, and questions on their rights. I saw that there was a lack of knowledge in our industry. Many artists who were songwriters, weren’t registered as songwriters. This was alarming and I felt that I could provide education and help our music industry protect their works.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am considered a jack of many trades. I have a full-time job, a part time job, and own my own business Red Head Creative Services. I am also a ASCAP songwriter/publisher. President of the South Texas Conjunto Association Houston Chapter, Promotions for Scpradio.com, Promotions for Red Room Recordz .I travel to see the artists I work with all over the state of Texas/Mexico and still make it in to work. Sometimes with 30 to 45 minutes sleep. I inmurse my self with music as a stress reliever. I am very passionate about our music culture and truly love what I do. I want our artist to have the knowledge to protect, copyright, their music, distribute on digital platforms, to leave a legacy for their families, to earn their royalties and to see them succeed. I have been in the Tejano music industry for over 30 years and Conjunto 9 years. I enjoy working with organizations that honor our Pioneers. To preserve, and educate . I provide a service to register for a Performance Rights Organization such as BMI / ASCAP, digital music distribution, music distribution to radio stations. Obtain cover song license, Copyright and much more. Our pioneer musicians/Artist or New rising artists are either not tech savvy or lack the information on how and what to do when releasing music. They are not aware that a recording studio doesn’t provide them with these services. A recording studio is to record your music, mix and master. They are unaware of all the other things that need to be taken care of before they release a single or album. I informed them of legality and trust me they are unaware of all the behind the scenes. That’s why I educate them as I provide them with options. It’s their music, image, and their legacy. So why not protect it. I can’t lie, it feels really awesome when a person is recognized for their contributions in our industry. So I try to help with writing bios, for Tejano ROOTS HALL OF FAME. Recognized by Governor Rick Perry in 1990. Each inductee is part of Texas History. Our footage of our interviews and coverage help Frank Solis with his campaign for the 1st Historical marker unveiled in Detroit Michigan for Tejano Music pioneers /Musicians. Recognized for their contributions thru the migration from Texas to Detroit.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are lots of great spots in our Houston area. If I had friends who wanted to hear Conjunto/ Tejano music, El Social Sports and Entertainment Bar, Tumbleweeds, Activo, Blue Bayou Cafe, would be some of my choices. Each week Danny Ovalle, Mikey Mike, Rob Garcia, and Tejano Loco, have a variety of Artst that perform in the Houston area. If we are talking food. I would say taquieria Del Sol, taqueria La Favorita, and let’s not forget Chili’s…after hours it’s IHop of course or the House of Pies. These are definitely my recommendations for my friends.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have always wanted to be a role model for my girls. Star Lozano Santos and Serena Segura. Setting an example of giving back back. Sharing the knowledge to help others, to be independent. Strong, and knowing that people are set in our paths for a reason. I would not be the person I am if I didn’t have industry peers, Radio Djs. Record labels, and artist pushing me, supporting me, trusting me, and believing that I can make a difference. With that being said. Scpradio.com has given me a home as a host. Dj, Podcaster. Diva Tequila had sponsored me for many years. South Texas Conjunto Association gave me my own Chapter to represent Houston. Tejano ROOTS HALL OF FAME for my Induction in 2017. In which I continue to seek out artist to create bios in hopes that they will be honored. There is no one person I can really thank because in the end many of given me the opportunity to pursue what I love from the age at 15. With fan clubs, answering the phones at the historic KQQK. Radio dj at KYST, Super Tejano 108. But 2 stand out Sam Almanza..He said to share my knowledge with others to help them succeed. Mr KQQK Tony Jaramillo for sending me out to retrieve the latest 33 or 45 from artist. Land the interviews, and learn the sound board. JJ JIMENEZ for giving me the opportunity at KYST.  He saw the passion and drive I had and continue to have. I learned and I made it a point that one day I would work for him. He left an impression on me at the of 16, and am truly grateful for the opportunity.
