We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Brice and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of everything we do here at Federal American Grill is our people. Our team is obsessed with hospitality, and they go above and beyond to make sure our guests have the best one and a half hour vacation possible when they walk into our restaurants.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started at age 13 as a dishwasher and worked my way up through every aspect of the restaurant business. Nothing was easy, but it was always worth it. My first experience as a sole owner came in 2011 when I purchased a bistro in Rice Village. In 2013, we opened our original location for The Federal American Grill on Shepherd (still there!) — and from there have continued to expand. We now have five locations throughout the greater Houston area.

Our company and our people are obsessed with hospitality — that’s why my wife, Jen, and I originally started the restaurants — and that’s what drives us to success today.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would of course take them to Federal for a drink to get the evening going — and would also pop in to all of our favorite neighborhood spots run by fellow restauranteurs. We all support each other! Houston is an amazing, diverse city — so a week would be short to pack in all the fun! Rockets games, restaurants, visiting the communities where each of our restaurants live would keep us very busy.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many mentors and leaders who have helped me along the way — and I consider myself a lifetime learner so always continuing to learn. A few amazing books that I go back to always: Atomic Habits, Good to Great, Traction.
