We had the good fortune of connecting with Mauricio Moel Miranda and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mauricio, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, my co-founder Andres and I have been personally touched by diabetes on multiple levels. My grandma is diabetic herself, and so is my aunt unfortunately. With one of the highest incidence rates of diabetes in the world, many Mexicans are affected by this disease. To my surprise, despite being pretty skinny, my glucose and insulin numbers were in the pre-diabetic range when I was 19.
As aspiring scientists, Andres and I started to read about the ketogenic diet –a diet consisting mainly of fats, with moderate amounts of protein, and very few carbs, and the potential therapeutic applications for the diet. While I’m not a doctor, and not authorized to give any health advice, a company named Virta Health has published data on how a low-carb/ketogenic diet can lead to diabetes Type 2 reversal in over 60% of cases. Inspired by studies like that one, we embarked on a keto diet and saw our numbers get much much better, After the summer, my number were no longer in the pre-diabetic range.
Unfortunately, the keto diet is very restrictive. One can’t eat many of the things we are used to eating on a daily basis, such as rice, oatmeal, or even most fruit. While in college, where you don’t have much control over what you eat, sticking to keto was particularly complicated. We tried to find a solution, but disenchanted with many of the keto products out there, we decided to partner with clinicians and researchers from all over the U.S. including places like Harvard Medical School and UC Davis to design the highest quality keto products. The result is Keto Kind.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are super excited to be launching in early 2022. It’s been a challenging few months getting the product ready for commercial production. As first-time entrepreneurs, we were blindsided by many of the challenges the process of scaling up has, and we’ve had to reformulate several times by now. However, we are super happy to be putting this product out in the market soon. As a fully organic, plant-based keto product with high quality ingredients and delicious taste we really believe that it will help anyone trying to follow a low-carb or ketogenic lifestyle.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, I’m not sure if I’m the best one to answer this question as I have lived in Boston for the past four years, and previously only in Mexico. However, if someone were to visit Boston I would surely tell them to go visit the college campuses across the city, from places like Harvard, to MIT to Boston College, the city has much to offer.
In addition, going downtown and soaking in the rich history of the city (and the U.S.) is a must. Stopping in at Trattoria il Panino for a classic, home-made Italian experience, or at Union Oyster House for a New England lobster roll would also top the list.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This is a tough question, as there are so many people I’d have to thank. Obviously my family and my co-founder know that I’d certainly not be where I am today if it not were for them. But I think I’ll dedicate this shoutout to our advisors who have been so willing to share their knowledge, expertise, and ideas with us to make sure we could craft the best possible product. To Dr. Nasha Winters, Dr. Keith Baar, Dr. Nick Norwitz, LJ Amaral, Miriam Kalamian, Doug Reynolds, Dr. Brian Lenzkes, Kristi Storoschuk, Travis Christofferson, and Kaushik Venkatesh thanks!
