We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Humphries and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As a women’s health and nutrition coach, I found women were seeking advice on living their healthiest life when it came to their food and lifestyle choices. However, the amount of toxins that they were using for beauty, anti aging and skin care, were causing damage to their overall health. I was inspired to create a line of skin care products that would actually deeply nourish the skin. Beauty Food was born! I don’t think women need to jeopardize their health in the name of beauty!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am an Integrative Nutrition coach, that has specialized in women’s health, for many years. Most other nutrition professionals will approach nutrition from a clinical direction. After many years, I began to see that our overall health is about more than just the food nutrients we consume. It is so connected to a truly balanced and nourishing life (nutrition, relationships, career, creative outlets, spirituality, exercise/movement and self care). The Beauty Food products are part of the intentional self care that allow women to feel beautiful and radiant on the outside– my coaching programs allow them to let that inner beauty shine!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I reside in the Texas Hill Country……..just a few hours west of Houston. In a small German town called Fredericksburg. We are the premier wine region of Texas and second in US wine production (just behind Napa). I would suggest that they begin with a wine education experience at Perspective Cellars and then schedule a wine tasting tour at a select few of my favorite wineries: Signor Vineyards, Augusta Vin, Grape Creek, Ab Astris, Adega Vinho and Narrow Path. We also have several local breweries and distilleries- for those who are not into wine. I would suggest lunch at Vaudeville on Main Street and a dinner at Otto’s is a MUST. If you are just looking for some light bites (charcuterie) and a lovely bottle of wine, listening to French jazz. La Bergerie is a locals’ favorite. Fredericksburg offers many outdoor adventures. Enchanted Rock for hiking the summit to enjoy the views, or a casual walk on the loop trails is a wonderful hill country experience. Cross Mountain is an easy stroll up that offers incredible views of Fredericksburg. If you are interested in interiors, antiques and eclectic finds. Visit Carol Hicks Bolton Antiquities on Lincoln Street (you will find my Beauty Food on the shelves). I could go on for days and days about the many interesting features of my gorgeous little town, but it may end up a novel. I suggest coming for a visit yourself. A short drive west from Houston, book an airbnb, have the time of your life, and soak up a little German culture. Willkommen (Welcome)!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have pondered this “shout out” story for quite awhile. I have spent so many years curating an amazing group of supportive friends. Each of them bring a unique vision and perspective to my life. My favorite serendipitous quote by Anais Nin says “Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born” . My friends and mentors are MANY and include artists, authors, entrepreneurs, marketing mavens, CEO’s, judges, farmers, teachers, …… a beautiful tapestry of GIFTs to my life.
