Meet Mia Suzanne Walker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mia Suzanne Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mia Suzanne, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
I believe it is 100% resilience. Keeping my head down and not worrying about what other musicians are doing and measuring myself and my journey on their successes. It’s easy to get bogged down in that and lose valuable time I should be focused on what I need to get done. Also resilience means it’s a marathon not a sprint comes into play daily. Setting reasonable goals for music production and promotion but still have time for personal days to catch up on life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The first thing that sets me apart from others in this business is that I’m a late bloomer and didn’t even start playing the guitar much less songwriting until I was 51. A friend of mine suggested I join the adult band at School of Rock where she worked. Within a year, I was songwriting and had started my own business. Within 3 years of that, I was into the Grammy organization and already on my second recording project. The challenges of sexism, ageism, funding recording projects and an aging body have all been present but I’ve been blessed with a resilient spirit and a fantastic team of individuals in my circle that have helped me through these hurdles. I want the world to know that I’m here for the long haul and even when I’m gone, Suzanne’s Band music will still be played managed by my descendants through my publishing company Blue Koi Music.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well it is Texas after all so Mexican food and BBQ would definitely be on the menu. Live music would also be on the list wherever we can find a show. I would like to go somewhere I hadn’t been before too to experience a new event like the Houston Interactive Aquarium and Animal Reserve. Most of the hanging out would be at my house for easy conversation.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My amazing husband Bill is my shoutout this time. He went from being a couch potato and showing up for a live show maybe once or twice a year to playing drums for me, running sound, being my roadie, mapping venues, scheduling rehearsals, procuring equipment and so much more. This year he started singing background vocals and is now working on singing a song solo! Astounding progress for an almost 70 year old man who never sang a song in public in his life.
