We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Horne Jr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Consistency. Any business owner understands that hard work and discipline are a given, but you have to constantly engage with clients, reach out to the masses, update your website and social media. It’s a daily mantra.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Hi. I am the owner and chef of bakery, Sweettooth Cheesecakes. My signature cakes are a 5-layer homemade cheesecake which has set me apart from my competitors. Starting as a hobby because of my love for cheesecakes, my business has grown so rapidly in the last couple of years, that I’ve had to leave my full-time job in pharmacy to keep up with the customer demand. As a small business owner, you wear many different hats. So my biggest challenge was just that, handling and managing 10 things at once. With the help of my wife, Tawana, we were able to split those responsibilities to allow my time to fully focus on baking. And she’s truly a marketing genius. What I want the world to know about my business? That men also belong in the kitchen. Lol. I always receive a surprising look when new customers realize that I’ve created such a beautiful cake.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We must visit Pappadeux Restaurant. The “Pappas” brand is a staple in Houston. Big portions, great atmosphere.

Houston Galleria is also a place we’d have to visit. My in-laws are from DC. Upon every visit, they honestly spend hours window shopping.

And lastly, a great hang out would be Discovery Green. Great for dog walking and exercise, and the view is amazing.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My dad and my wife deserve recognition for getting me where I am today. My dad because he taught me at an early age that hard work and focus will get you where you need to go. My wife keeps me motivated and pushes me to think outside of the box.
