We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Lopez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
We started a mobile Dj service first, and in order to get more clients we started SCP Radio to use as a way to advertise our Dj service and to start a DJ Mix Show so potential clients can hear how we actually sound. The mobile Dj service was supposed to be our main business, but SCP Radio became more than just a way to advertise, we began meeting people in the industry and we started helping out up and coming Tejano artists. This became a passion of ours and now SCP Radio is how people know us! By helping so many artists we get all kinds of sponsors and companies that want to run ads on our station. We are having an awesome time running SCP Radio and meeting so many wonderful people!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
SCP Radio started as a small radio station in Houston, Tx, without a mentor or any previous radio experience. I had to google everything I needed to figure out how to run the station. I’m not the creative type, I’m more the problem-solving type. My background is in computers, and I was able to use that to my advantage. Jimmy Peters and Mario Cuellar are my partners in SCP Radio, and they both are the creative types that come up with ideas and I am able to make them happen. We are usually known for being the high-tech station, by not having the money FM and AM stations have to buy equipment, we have to be even more creative to accomplish what they can do at events. I think we have raised the bar for what is expected from radio stations at events like the Tejano award shows we usually attend! The three of us Dj, run SCP Radio and a cook off team, we also help out as many people as we can by donating our time or donating whatever else we can to benefits for people in our community. We work hard, we give what we can, and we love what we do!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you come visit Houston, I would take you to Kemah and Galveston to hang out. We would eat at El Nopalito, Kura Revolving Sushi Bar, Hangar Kitchen and La Favorita. On Friday night I would bring you to Skylab Studios to watch the Super Tejano Friday Show!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our families have allowed us to continue to do what we love to do!
