We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Hougland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Since childhood I have always wanted to model, act, and be involved in the fashion industry. As I got older I didn’t have the confidence and resources to pursue my passions. Fast forward to the pandemic. My husband who works in healthcare was one of the first people to test positive for COVID-19 at his hospital. My personal experience with suddenly being the sole parent to our twin sons and dealing with the uncertainty of my husbands outcome took me to a dark place mentally. Through healing mentally and spiritually I realized that life is too short and overnight a fire sparked inside of me to believe in myself. No matter the outcome the time to do what I truly love has become the most important thing to me. That is when LifeandStyleofShelly was born!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
One of the things I try emphasize on top of fashion is to believe and love your self for who you are with flaws and all. Once you can do that you can put yourself out there with more confidence. I am very proud of all the hard work I put in everyday. I am most excited that I have the privilege to get up every morning to work on what I truly love and am passionate about. Consistency is something that I have always struggled with and continue to work on. Being consistent is one of the main keys to achieving my goals. Learning to be consistent while balancing life and work has not been easy. What I have learned is that managing my time effectively and structuring my daily routine is a must. I have learned that I accomplish more through consistent self discipline, structure, and routine. I want the world to know I am still a work in progress, but that we are all able to achieve whatever we strive to do keeping important things in mind. Focus on the positive, don’t be afraid to fail, and put those blinders on. In the end the only competition is the person in the mirror.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Even though these days I’m more of homebody person one of my favorite places to visit for drinks and to catch up would be RA sushi. They have great music and the vibe there is a good start to the night. For breakfast or brunch Cuchara is a great authentic Mexican restaurant where they also have mariachis who are super sweet and will serenade you while eating. For lunch Sambuca is a great place to visit and their ceviche is phenomenal! At night they have bands and great music to dance to. The museums are a great option to get inspired and learn about different cultures. Ice Skating would definitely be on the list as well. In the winter Discovery Green has a beautiful display of Christmas and Ice Skating area with Starbucks next door. For the summer I’d opt for Memorial Mall Ice Skating area where you can also grab a bite at their many restaurants.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband and my twin boys. My husband has been my biggest cheerleader and has seen the potential in me since day one. He’s been my support system, my go to person in every aspect and always looks out for my best interest. He’s taught me not to worry what others think and to shoot for the stars. My twin boys have also taught me a lot about myself. I do this for them also, to show them it’s never too late to pursue your dreams through hard work.
