We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Modwella and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michelle, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When I first started out in nursing, my full time ER job took up a majority of my life. I think this was beneficial to help me learn how to be a successful ER nurse. I was at the hospital 3 days a week working 12 hour shifts at night. My days off consisted of sleeping and catching up on sleep. I lost a lot of sleep, weight and time with my family and friends while working night shift. But as a new nurse, I had to put in my time.

At my next job, I was able to switch to day shift which was life changing. I could actually stay awake at family functions. But I was still missing weekends and holidays which left me with a severe case of FOMO every. single. time.

As I progressed on in my career, I was eventually able to become PRN at the hospital which means “as needed” in medical jargon. Basically I only have to work 3 shifts every 6 weeks at minimum. No holidays. No weekends. This is what I had been waiting for! This allowed me to pursue a career change while still working in the ER.

I was able to start working for a company called Modwella, which allowed me to transition into becoming a mobile IV nurse. From there, I dove head first! Being a concierge nurse was so different than being in the ER. Instead of being a part of someone’s care on the worst day of their lives, I was able to help prevent them from having to go to the ER or help them with health care prevention and wellness. It was an entirely different aspect of the health care field and I fell in love.

Not only did it have those perks, I was also able to make my own schedule and be more present in my home life. After 15 years as a nurse, the most important thing I’ve learned is that you’re replaceable at work.. and irreplaceable at home.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a concierge Nurse for a company called Modwella. Modwella was formed from “modern wellness.” What is a concierge Nurse? I come to you! We are 100% mobile. You get to choose what services you want, what blood tests you want ordered and all of the aspects of your care. It can definitely feel like this isn’t an option when going to your health care provider or the hospital. You have the say in your care at Modwella!

We offer IV infusions with vitamins and medications, blood work, NAD or anti-aging services, Iron infusions, Tox or aesthetic injections, weight loss medications and so much more. And the best part is that everything is done in the comfort of your home/office/gym/wherever! And there are no additional fees for our mobile services.

Modwella made me realize how much I enjoy the marketing aspect of business. To get my own clients, I had to put in the effort. I started my instagram page where I worked up from there. I reached out to local influencers and offered to do collaborations with them. I did pop-ups at businesses to get my name out there. And I put a lot of time into making social media posts. Which has helped me grow my business immensely!

I am now in charge of our social media page for the state of Texas!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I can honestly say that I don’t know much about where the hot spots are in Houston. But I’m always down to try new places & love a restaurant with a good vibe! I live in the burbs up north in The Woodlands so a typical night out for me usually includes a Carajillo at Sixty Vines followed by some cajun food at Schilleci’s and a night cap while listening to live music somewhere!

But every so often, I’ll venture into the city for a concert at The Heights Theatre or 713. I usually rely on my hip cousin, Maggie, to take me to the hot spots. Or my friend, Daniel, to tell me the new cool places to eat/drink. For brunch, Tiny Boxwoods is my fave!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be a Nurse at Modwella if it wasn’t for my bestie, Vandella. She had previously worked with my boss, Tyler, at a hospital in College Station. Tyler had initially asked my friend if she was interested in the job as they were hoping to open a Houston branch of Modwella. Vandella and I had recently completed a travel contract together in Detroit, Michigan and I had moved back to Houston. I wasn’t happy with solely working at the ER where Vandella and I had met. Something was missing. I needed a little bit of change (hence why I enjoyed travel nursing.. I can’t stay still for too long!)

Vandella had just moved to Ohio to live with her boyfriend (now fiancé!!) but told Tyler that she had a friend who may be interested. And I was! I spoke with Tyler on the phone and the rest is history. Over 2 years now and I’m so thankful to be a part of the company. So big thanks to Vandella and to Tyler for taking a chance on me! Most importantly, thanks to my husband, Tom, for always encouraging and supporting me in my career. His support gave me the confidence I needed to take a chance with Modwella!
