We had the good fortune of connecting with Miguel Rojas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Miguel, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I went to school for computer science, it was a fun adventure but the more I coded and got to know the industry I realized it was not for me. I enjoyed it a lot but I lost my passion for it. I realized art was the career I wanted to pursue when I would go paint or develop film after long nights of coding. It was my form of stress relief. My way out of the pressures around me, it made me feel free.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what separates me from others would have to be my drive to express myself and as arrogant as this sounds not caring what others think about me or the art I am making. I make it for me and no one else. If people like it, dope, if people don’t like it.. thats dope too. I’m young, I still have a long life and career ahead of me. Eventually I want to help others and the community I am around. Nothing is easy in life, challenges will jump out at you when you least expect it. A big challenge I am facing is being and loving myself. I compare myself to others too much, not in a “I hope they like me” type of way but more in a ” damn I wish I was as jiggy as them” I’m still working on that haha. Other than that I think the biggest challenge would have to be not giving up, on myself and the dreams I hope to accomplish. One thing that has helped me is living one day at a time. What is one goal I want to accomplish today.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take them to be best thrift store but I’m going to be selfish and not list them out so people dont buy all the good stuff. Ok pavement is a cool place to check out. And since we’re in the Montrose area I would definitely take them to the best comfort vegan cafe, Korny Vibes. The Menil Collection is a dope place to check some art out, plan to be there a while theres so much to see and it free.99… Theres a lawn out at front where I would plan a picnic or just hang out under the trees. Memorial park is always a must check out and the James Turrell “Twilight Epiphany” Skyspace is something I like to take my friends to. Soul food Vegan has really really good foods, its located next to Emancipation park in third ward. I’d probably also take em to a mosh party, Don’t Die hosts the best ones I’ve gone to fr.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Other than my family who supports the career I chose, I think the friends I’ve made over the years deserve a shoutout, friends I love u so much 🙂 But one of my closest friends who supports and motivates me would have to be Will, @willderness.mccarthy on IG, He has been hiking around, collecting cool rocks and making his own paint, his works are phenomenal. my personal favorite would have to be “RIDE”. Every time I look at it I find something new I’m obsessed with.
