We had the good fortune of connecting with Mikia Semone and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mikia, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I have learned how to organize everything. I always make sure my family comes first. Never over extend myself, and realize I can’t do everything.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Mikia Sweet Treats specializes in all things sweet. Cakes, pies, cookies, cinnamon rolls, ice cream, candy bars, etc. All of my homemade desserts are made from simple and easy named ingredients.
OK a little back story about me before I was doing cakes I was actually in the engineering field. I was a piping designer for a really great company. However when I became pregnant I decided that I was gonna take a year off of work to really bond with my daughter. In the process of that bonding time I was looking at the Food Network channel and a show came on, Ace of cakes. They were making all these really beautiful extravagant cakes and I thought to myself like hey I can do that. Even though I never decorated a cake a day in my life. It had to be fate because 2 weeks later I received a phone call from a family member inviting my daughter and I to her daughter’s birthday party. I asked who was doing the birthday cake and she said that she was gonna pick it up from a supermarket. I asked her if I can do the cake. She responded, you do cakes? Needless to say, I lied. 🤥 Yes, I do cakes, i replied. She said ok I can do the cake. The theme is princess and her daughter loves pink. Ok I had less than a week to pull off a princess themed cake. So I figured I’ll watch Ace of Cakes that week before the party. It shouldn’t be to hard, right. I decided to do a 2 tiered, different shades of pink fondant princess cake with a tiara. I must have spent 10+ hours trying to decorate that cake. Putting fondant on, taking fondant off. I did that so many times I lost count. It didn’t look that hard on tv…lol The end result, I hated that cake. To my surprise they loved it.
After that cake I was asked to do my nephew’s birthday cake. Another 2 tiered cake. The holy spirit was holding those cakes together, because none of them had any kind of supports inside. Then my niece and other nephew cake. So I figure I’ll be doing cakes for family and friends for that year, until I returned back to work. However within that year, life happened. My daughter was vaccine injured at a year old. She stopped walking, talking and was no longer able to sit up on her own.
I’ve always been that push forward type of person. So when I noticed the change, literally the next day. I asked doctors what was that next step? I didn’t have time to really process what was happening. I just knew I need to do something to help her. Her new doctor suggested we start her with speech, occupational, and physical therapy right away. Also she started seeing different specialists. Life Was Happening. I knew right then I wasn’t going back to the engineering field. I had to be there for my daughter. By the grace of God I was still getting cake orders. Now I had to start charging for the cakes and not just for the ingredients..lol But within that process of everything that was going on, “life happening”. I realized that baking cakes brought me so much peace. With the music on and the smell of delicious cakes baking. I did not have a care in the world. I still get that same feeling now while baking.
Fun fact, a lot of my dessert recipes actually came to me in a dream. I use to, and still do at times wake up in the middle of the night to recreate a dessert I dreamt about. That’s when I realized that it wasn’t just a stress reliever but a true Passion.
What sets me apart from others? I just do me and do what I love.
How did you get to where you are today professionally? Never giving up and putting love into everything that I do. Keep creating that love at 1st bite.
What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way? Life happens everyday. No matter the obstacles keep pushing forward.
What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I truly love what I do. I don’t create just pretty cakes but delicious ones also.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
