Meet Mila McManus MD | Founder and CEO of The Woodlands Institute for Health & Wellness

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mila McManus MD and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mila, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always been more of a leader than a follower. I like to take charge of situations and projects. To a fault, I’m a perfectionist, so it seems natural to want to take charge of everything I do.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My journey with The Woodlands Institute for Health & Wellness began with personal health struggles that started from birth. I am a “Why” girl, and was not getting answers about why I had so many health issues, so I decided to go to medical school to figure it out on my own. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the answers in my medical training either. What I did learn was how to prescribe a pill for every ill, and graduated from residency training on at least 12 prescription medicines. And to make matters worse, I’d never felt worse in my life. Shortly after starting my private practice in Family Medicine, I had the opportunity to learn about functional medicine. It was immensely eye-opening and started me on the path to better health and on the path to practicing better medicine. Within a few months of starting functional medicine protocols, I’d never felt better in my life and I knew I had to do this for other people. It’s been a long yet fulfilling road, and I love that I get to help people really heal, and to educate them along the way. I’m always looking for new cutting-edge, nontoxic therapies to offer our patients. Also, I’ve always had a passion for supporting patients with cancer, offering alternative and complementary therapies, wherever they are in their journey. I must say that starting and growing a business with no formal business training has been quite the challenge! If I had to do it over again, I think I would have gone back to school to get an MBA before starting my own business. Nevertheless, passion and hard work got me to where I am today.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend came to visit, we would take walks around the neighborhood and Market Street. My husband would cook organic, clean, and healthy food for us, and we would sit across the kitchen counter watching it all happen, and laughing about life along the way. I prefer to eat at home where i know how the food is being prepared, and that’s it’s organic. For other entertainment, we would hang out in the pool and hot tub at my house, and then hang out in our library to talk by the fire and/or read a book. As you can tell, I’m more of a home-body and don’t love crowded places.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thank Dr. Steven Hotze for his mentorship over the years. I’d also like to thank Celeste Potter, MBA, for being an integral part of the growth and success of The Woodlands Institute for Health & Wellness.
