We had the good fortune of connecting with Milly Burton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Milly, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I chose an artistic, and creative background for my business because I’ve always been captivated by works of art. Like most kids I would always draw pictures like flowers and stick figures, and I’d also have my mom buy me bird houses that I would glue together and paint myself and decorate. I would use my old clothes to make clothes for my Barbie dolls… so I’ve always been into art in all forms, no matter how crude, elementary, or even sophisticated. I love Bosch paintings as well because they are dark, and I do paint abstracts for my personal collection. I’ve always been really into art but most people never knew that about me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
One of the things I really want people to understand is that I actually do put a lot of love, and labor into what I do. Since I am a perfectionist about a lot of the things that I make, if it has one flaw (even if you’re OK with the flaw), I will go out of my way to redo it because I don’t sell something if it doesn’t meet my standards. I would say that’s one of the things that really sets me apart is that I take what I do seriously. A lot of people make jokes about what I do and say “oh well, you mix a bowl together and there’s some epoxy, and glitter and this and that…” but it’s so much more difficult because you have to be really creative, and you have to think outside the box so that you don’t churn out average product like many others do. There is a very saturated market right now in my industry so I am always trying to find things to set me apart from everyone else. Getting noticed I would say; is one of the harder things about what I do. Promptness, CREAVITY, and superior customer service is how I plan to build, and maintain my customer base going forward.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favorite spots to visit here, which I actually haven’t gone to in a while, is the strand in Galveston. They have a candy store that makes salt water taffy right there in front of you, and on certain days if you’re lucky, the guy making it will actually throw a piece to you for free. There are so many other great attractions here in Galveston County that I honestly couldn’t just choose one. The Kemah Boardwalk is one of my favorites because on the weekend you can catch live concerts and then you can also bring the kids for family fun, including an area where you can feed the catfish and the carnival is there as well.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to recognize my family, of course. My cousin Takashi has been a very helpful person throughout my journey of starting a business. She gives me tips and always tells me to let her know if I need help. She is a business owner herself, and I know that anytime I face challenges that I can always call on her for good advice. But, my fiancé has been my primary motivator, and he’s been really supportive of me wanting to follow my dreams with my business from day one.
