We had the good fortune of connecting with Miriam Green and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Miriam, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
My work life balance has changed over time in a positive way. At one point in time in my life I didn’t necessarily have that balance. I was mostly work, work, work. Which left little time for me to do things with my children. Now, I’ve learned to balance things. I have a cut off time or days through out the week where I take off so I can make sure I have time for my family and make memories with them. I think balance is important because without it some things won’t get done or someone will feel left out at some point if you don’t have proper balance.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started Mirry’s HairCare during my first year in college, I ended up getting pregnant and going back home. I was 18 years old and really knew nothing about working a job because my parents were always entrepreneurs themselves. So I had applied to become a security officer and that lasted two weeks literally lol. I knew that wasn’t for me, but I had went on various interviews and every interview they would be like, “it sounds like you should be a hairstylist.” At the time I was confused, but it was because I would only have how I loved doing hair etc because that’s all I really ever liked doing since I was a little girl was comb others hair. One day, I heard about people who advertised on Craigslist their businesses etc. so I decided to make an ad post about doing hair. I had no pictures to post at the time. I just had my words and a phone number. Well, not even two days later people started hitting me up about doing all kinds of hairstyles I hadn’t even done before. It was crazy, but I just tried whatever style they asked for. But, shout-out to all those people who came to me and were my practice heads! Lol y’all the real MVP. That’s how it all started. I would have so many people I did in my bedroom I had a chair next to my bed and a tv in my room for them to watch but I was able to make enough money that first year to move into my own apartment and sustain my children and myself over the years because I’ve come across so many great people who believed in me and have supported my brand over the years. I truly love and enjoy protecting my client’s hair and edges. I love interacting with them and making them feel good and confident about themselves when they leave my chair.
In the recent years, I’ve faced challenges with my hands and wrist from braiding so much over the years. At one time I had actually retired from it to pursue other business adventures during the pandemic, but I’ve realized that no matter what I do my heart is just about taking care of my people. I love doing hair and having genuine conversations and interacting with my people. I want the world to know that Outside of The Most High blessing me with my kids and family…braiding hair makes me happy, because it’s deeper than hair for me. It’s connecting with people and making them feel even better about themselves that just does something for me. My people are like my second family and I love them and am so grateful for them!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would say to have some good food and fun I would recommend them checking out the Escape room or The Escape Game. I think they would enjoy that. As far as food places I would say of course The Turkey Leg Hut, Hunan Cafe, Caribbean Hot pot Grill. Some nice parks such as Discovery Green, Hermann Park and Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes, I would like to dedicate my shout out to my family and friends. I think there’s more than a few that deserves a little credit but I would say my mother & father, Ernestine & Ulysses Jamison for allowing me to first start out braiding hair out my bedroom at their home and allowing all these random ppl in their home to get their hair braided so that I could make money to be able to provide for my son at the time (He was a little baby).. I also have to give a major shout out to my husband, Mike Green for teaching me about what it is to have a work life balance, because before getting married I didn’t know what that was lol. He’s also been so supportive and encouraging in every way of every thing I’ve ever decided to do within these last five years.
