We had the good fortune of connecting with Monica Cuellar-Willis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monica, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
When outsiders here the word recovery, they automatically think of post-injury rehab. However, recovery has several definitions, and, in our business, recovery focuses on restoring muscle function, improving performance and preventing injuries. Year-round youth sports continue to increase, with more practices and games added to a schedule, unfortunately this type of volume on their body can be detrimental to the growth process. Preventative recovery helps youth athletes avoid an injury, keeps them moving and increases performance.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was kind of pushed into becoming a small business owner, after 15+ years as a Corporate Sales Executive, I was in a major accident suffering a major and debilitating injury. It was that accident that pushed me into starting my business. I have always been passionate about sports rehabilitation/recovery, but never fully committed to the career after graduating from college. There are many challenges that come with being a small business owner, but my experience in sales has really helped me grow my business. The biggest challenge for me was social media marketing, I overcame the challenge by learning and studying other small business owners and social media marketing trends to help develop my own brand.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that we value each and every person that comes into our facility. Whether they are professional athletes, amateur athletes, or an everyday athlete. Elixir Muscle Recovery is for EVERYONE. People just want to feel good, whether it’s after an injury, a workout, or after a long day at work, we are here to help!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oooo…this is a hard one. There are so many good places to eat and lots to do in Houston. But I would definitely take them to the museum district, the zoo, and catch a few sporting events. As for places to eat some of my local favorite places are Drunken Oyster, Bocaro Kitchen and Wine Bar, Lotus Seafood, Bosscat Kitchen and Libations, Bun Slut Food truck, my list could go on and on when it comes to food. I am definitely a foodie.
Some of my favorite places to hang out would be a new spot in Katy, Pop Stroke. Buffalo Bayou is also a great place to go for a morning jog/walk or bike ride. So much to do, so little time!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Yes! I wouldn’t have taken this leap into entrepreneurship without the support of my family, my husband and my children. They are my biggest supporters, always sharing my posts and referring friends. I couldn’t do it without any of them.
In an industry like sports, that is dominated by men, it is hard to gain any kind of respect. But my husband, who is a coach himself, has been my biggest supporter. In just about every facet imaginable of competitive sports, women are contributing in a unique way. From healthcare, to management, analysis, and even owning sports teams, women are conquering the field. Without my family’s support, I would never have ventured into this business, I would have ventured into a different path just like I did right out of college. It is never too late to go for what you truly love and are passionate about.
