We had the good fortune of connecting with Myrna Barber and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Myrna, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I would say that Butter Sugar Bake’s success continues to be the word of mouth recommendations by our satisfied customers.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I get excited, and so encouraged, when my customers say that my cookies have the perfect amount of sweetness; that they are not hard, but not too soft either; that they cannot eat just one; or that my cupcakes are the best they’ve eaten. There are countless bakeries in the Houston area; it is an honor to hear these compliments. I started my home based business, operating under the Texas Cottage Food Law, in 2014. The law itself made the start up rather easy. One perceived challenge that presented itself was the question- “Another cookie business?” The answer? Yes, why not? The reality is that people like having a variety to choose from. Sometimes I have just what someone is looking for. And that is exciting to me! I am learning to embrace new challenges as they present themselves. The beauty of life is not to try to be perfect, but to grow in our learning. Whether it be a new website format or new decorating technic, learning is growing! Something to know about me is that I do not take for granted the choice a Mom, Daughter, Sister, Grandma, Dad, or Friend makes when she or he places an order with my small business, Butter Sugar Bake. It is an honor.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother, Irma Castillo, inspired my love for baking, and she was one of the first people who encouraged me to start the business when I began considering it. Her continued encouragement is a big support to me. I could never leave out giving thanks and credit to God for blessing Butter Sugar Bake. Last, but definitely not least, all of my customers~ without them Butter Sugar Bake would not succeed.
