We had the good fortune of connecting with Mz Blue and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mz Blue, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose to pursue a creative career because I have been involved with arts/entertainment ever since I was a kid. I would find gigs in the newspaper and have my parents take me to them. I also took acting and music in school and was always performing for school talent shows. Of course when I grew up I went where the money was, and that was oil & gas because it paid the bills. However, I still held close to my dreams in the art/entertainment field. After an un-expected turn in my career I was able to start my very own radio station in 2019. I strive on being my authentic self so pursuing a creative career allows me to do this. I have never really liked being restricted or following what some believe to be the norm. I enjoy being my own boss and setting my own rules. I have connected with a lot of interesting and talented people being an artist (Rapper/Writer) and also by having my own radio show.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I see a lot of people navigate to mainstream in terms of the entertainment industry. So mainstream artist are always sought after primarily in radio. I have had the opportunity to interview mainstream artist but my primary focus is on the underground entertainment market. I know how difficult it can be budget wise trying to make a name for your brand. I treat the underground artist just like mainstream artist and I interview people from all walks of life and this is what helps to set me apart from others. A lot of the time people think that an unknown person’s story is not interesting enough to attract views or get likes. I am here to tell you that this isn’t true. My interviews have been acknowledged by some very important people and this has kept me motivated. It has not been easy, there have been many road blocks or negativity along the way. I over come these type of challenges by not feeding into the hate. I keep being consistent and I don’t stay stuck on what method didn’t work, I move on to the next until it works. One of the lessons I learned along the way is once you start something you cannot stop! you absolutely have to keep going know matter how tired you are. Inconsistency is the biggest turn-off especially when working on getting potential fans, supporters. I want people to know that my brand is authentic and represents a movement for individuals wanting to have creative control to express themselves and gain exposure while doing it. My story is about bossing up and creating your own opportunities. When you think every door have closed on you, remember that you hold the key to un-locking any door that you want through hard work and determination.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend that wasn’t from Houston and they stayed a weekend I would take them to eat a Pappadeaux because I love their seafood. I would take them to a nice Hookah Lounge or Comedy spot because Houston has a great club scene. I also like Dave & Busters because it has a large game room, and they have added more games, and the food and drinks are good.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shout out to my good friend Ish Barri at Barri Media Un-Restricted/Barri Media Photography in Houston. Since I launched my own radio station he has been a co-host on my show and does the filming for each episode. He also takes my professional pictures and help with show structure. Before I launched I was concerned with business cost because it is very expensive running a radio station. He didn’t hesitate to step in with splitting the cost and I was very grateful for that. It has been trial and error but we have worked out all of the kinks and it’s been great having him as a business partner.
