We had the good fortune of connecting with Natalie Olvera and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Natalie, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Starting a business has definitely taught me many things. One of the most important things it has taught me is that it is ok to fail. Starting a business is very nerve wreaking because you try to make sure everything goes smoothly and the main focus is trying to prevent your business from failing. We’ve all been in a situation where we’ve started a project or had an a idea in which we thought was going to succeed and ultimately it just didn’t work out. Same thing with my business. I started out my esthetic career with one of the very first courses I took which was a lash extensions course. I spent so much money in that course thinking that I would do really well and it’ll take of, but when I actually starting practicing it, I realized how much I really disliked it and because of that my work was terrible which led to me feeling like such a failure. But you know what? I took that not so successful situation and it made me hungry and made me want to keep going until I really found my niche. Success doesn’t happen overnight, I mean look at all the successful people in the world, musicians, authors, actors, pro athletes, like Serena Williams for example. She worked her butt off and failed so many times before she became one of the world most famous tennis players. You see, failing isn’t bias, it happens to all of us. success comes from failures because In those moments you learn from your mistakes and in the process you learn not to repeat the same mistakes but to be better.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Touch by Nat started a few years ago as a small home based business. I started off with facials and would gradually add other services such as brow lamination, laser hair removal, etc. Today I am proud to say that I’ve officially opened up my very first store! I’m excited to see where this new journey takes me. Many don’t know but I started off in a small tiny room in my parents house! Now my store has 4 rooms, reception area and a huge waiting area! Crazy to think about where I started, especially since this journey hasn’t been easy! There were definitely many challenges! There were times that i literally couldn’t afford new products because I wasn’t making enough from the few clients I had. In those moments I definitely questioned myself and whether or not I should keep my business going. Lucky for me I had a good support system that always reassured me that it was ok to be slow in the beginning and that everything would fall into place. So I continued hustling, handing out flyers, marketing like crazy, creating content that was relatable and soon after more and more people started finding out about my business! I think in the process of it all people saw who I was and what my business is about which is being authentic. I think that is also what helps me stand out and what keeps my clients coming back. I’ve always been honest to my clients since day one, and wouldn’t try to push to make a sell or convince them to do more work then what they came for. I fee as though many businesses now a days lose that genuine connection with clients and make their main focus all about making money. But to me it’s not about the money, it’s more about creating a relationship with the client, making them feel like they can trust me with their brows, or skin for that nature! That is something I learned along the way. Many people walk into these appointments nervous as hell because the last person botched their brows/lashes so they come to you with the little trust they have left hoping that you’ll change their mind! By being myself and making them feel welcomed not only do they ease up, but they feel a lot more confident about who they’re letting touch their face! And when they leave happy I know I’ve done my job, money is just the bonus!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
That’s a tough one! There’s just so much to do in the big Apple! If we had a week long I’d definitely take them to each borough just because I feel as though each borough has something unique about them! You have little Italy where you’ll find some really good Italian restaurants, Brooklyn has some really dope spots, and markets, queens (my hometown) has many options for Spanish food where you can’t go wrong!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
To my boyfriend. Since day one, you would listen to all of my crazy ideas and find ways to make it happen. You’ve always believed in me and never doubted my potential. He’s been my mentor, support system, and motivation all in one. My career wouldn’t be what it is today without him pushing me and giving me tough love when I needed it. And to my parents, who migrated to this country to give me and my siblings a better life. You’ve also been a huge part of my career and I couldn’t have done it without your support.
