We had the good fortune of connecting with Nayoka Simone and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nayoka, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica and growing up in those times in a third world country wasn’t easy for my family. I knew watching my mom that I wanted to make her proud. The goal was to change the narrative of living a struggle lifestyle of watching my mom trying to make ends meet. After several attempts with other career opportunities I knew that there was more in store for me. So, let’s fast forward to when my career was launched as Interior Designer due to being placed in a very life changing situation. After experiencing a bad divorce, having to start life over again along with becoming a single parent it was then I discovered who god had destined for me to become. I had no idea that having to move and designing my new home would’ve been the beginning of a new journey in becoming an entrepreneur. I was taking my stress out in designing a home for myself and my children to make things comfortable enough where I didn’t want them to lose a beat of having a designed functional lifestyle. So, it was at that point along with friends who loved my home that they encouraged me to become an interior designer. I had to stop and pray asking God to become my navigational tool if it was something that he wanted me to do. After praying daily and once I heard his voice affirming that if I did this he would guide me along the way. Especially because I had no contractors, contract agreements or business plan in the launch of my new found career. But, it was God’s plan for me to launch a creative career. My career started with nothing, that turned into me becoming an author, award winning designer, being featured on television and so much more. So, to anyone reading this, execute your faith and follow your heart to pursue your life’s purpose. Not saying it’ll be easy but it’s worth it when you’re willing to let go and let GOD!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My design projects definitely keep me extremely busy professionally. Initially my focus started with residential design and now has started to slightly shift to commercial design which is even more rewarding. Also, my partnership with Lowes and other brands keep me busy to ensure we are making homeowners aware of their new collection of home furniture and accessories. Educating my audience is important and mentoring aspiring designers is what I truly enjoy too!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to a really nice restaurant, museum, and we would attend home markets because most of my friends enjoy what I do. In addition, they love when i give them tips about elevating the aesthetics in their home. But of course we’ve gotta have some girl time so why not toast yo the good life especially during these tough times. My friends and I value one another and building a strong friendship circle us a part of the journey.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout my beautiful daughters Nylah & Rai’Ven! My sisters, family, and my clients for supporting my glowing journey. I appreciate Lowes, Essence, and Forbes for featuring my design portfolio.
