We had the good fortune of connecting with Nelson Ruiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nelson, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
In Dreams, when I came to the United States I always thought of doing something on my own, I was in the land of opportunities, so I started looking for what to do. I went to a lot of popups and that’s where I first met the scented candles made from soy wax. I remember that my mother also made candles at home, and used all kinds of essences to maintain harmony in our home, I liked it a lot, so once I could learn to make my candles I felt good, and I like the idea of thinking that people can change their day with a good essence.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am proud to have arrived in this country with only $400 in my pocket and to be where I am now, things that I have achieved for my work and for the person I am today thanks to the values and love of my family. Professionally, I studied social communication at university, specializing in advertising and public relations. With the new era of social media I have become interested in digital marketing and photography. I could also say that I am proud to be able to raise my brand with my own effort, I had to learn about creating web pages, photography for web and social networks, graphic design and much more. All this has not been easy because I have had to learn many new things in terms of digital marketing, every day there are new ways of doing it, and we always have to be updated. Many videos on YouTube, reading many articles on Google has helped me learn more about many topics necessary to start a business. Through the whole process of building a brand, I have learned a lot about the culture of this country, because I must know the tastes and behaviors of my customers, it is also important to know the product we are selling very well, to do our tests before launching ourselves on the market, and knowing how and where to do it, there is no magic formula, but there are some steps that must be followed. Finally, I would like people to know about my products and feel satisfied with the quality and their performance.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In Houston I really like to walk down Main Street, have a coffee in one of the places that can be found in the area and when the sun goes down I go to one of its bars and enjoy a good conversation with a cold beer. I like restaurants with a country, vintage or farm style touch, in Houston I like the food and the atmosphere of Cedar Creek, Agora cafe, I love Indian and Arabic food, as well as that of my land, Venezuelan food. I like to take my bike and ride around Herman Park, Bayou, Memorial Park, I think these parks have nice spaces just to lie on the grass and rest. I really like the contact with nature. I like the Japanese garden at Herman Park. Sometimes I like to go to Galveston in the afternoon to enjoy the sunset. And to enjoy a night of bars and dance for a while I like to go to the Montrose area, it’s where I get a really good vibe and happy people. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First of all, to God and the universe for putting me where I am, for putting in my path wonderful people who have contributed directly and indirectly to fulfilling my dreams. To my family and friends who have believed in my project and supported my ideas and to all those who buy my products, as they are helping me to continue with my dreams.
