We had the good fortune of connecting with Neville Diony and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Neville, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Rlye Technologies, Inc. started off the frustration of complaints from drivers for not making enough money for their time and commitment devoted to driving for big corporations such as Lyft or Uber. I saw the opportunity to challenge the ride-sharing industry, by providing a transparent option for fare negotiations by the people who matter most – the drivers and passengers. Intending to provide higher earning potential for drivers, I decided to develop the RLYE platform.
What should our readers know about your business?
I work as an IT engineering project management consultant. However, I am an entrepreneur who has developed a ridesharing application called RLYE (pronounced – Re.ly). The app is an alternative to Uber Lyft, or any other application out there. What makes our product unique is the fact that RLYE puts the fare negotiations in the hands of the passenger and driver.
What sets the company apart is the transparency of fare negotiations. Currently, drivers for major applications such as Uber, Bolt, and Lyft make a percentage of the fare, without taking into account their expenses for gas, repairs, etc. The fare for each trip is decided by the company so there’s no consideration for the driver’s expenses, but rather an algorithmic decision that favors these companies financially. I wanted to challenge that and put the decision-making in the hands of the people to negotiate for themselves.
I started by thinking through all the possible scenarios through which I can effect change in the current business models. Once I arrived at the idea of a self-organized marketplace, the idea of RLYE was clear – let the passengers and drivers do their negotiation. I then contracted a company to develop the Rlye Rider and Driver app and worked with them to ensure that it was coded to my preferences and specifications.
The process wasn’t easy, as every aspect of the app development from concept to expenses was handled solely by me. However, my determination to challenge the current status quo was the objective. RLYE will soon be launched quite likely here in Houston, TX, and will provide drivers with the opportunity to sit at the decision-making table and improve earnings for rideshare gig workers.
What I am interested in people knowing about my brand is the transparency of operations. The fact that it empowers local communities, and provides both savings and earning potential to passengers and drivers. My story is still being written, but it is one that I think should inspire everyone once it is at its peak.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am African, and with Afrobeats making enough waves in the music entertainment scene right now, I enjoy going to most local African lounges in the city. As for food, I am not that much of a foodie, and I don’t eat out as much. I enjoy the home-cooked meal. So if a friend was visiting, we would eat at home, pre-game with some nice scotch, and then go out to any of the lounges that cater to Afrobeats’ music.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Personally, my shoutout will go to my family, but more specifically my wife – Stella. She’s been the instrument of my success so far. From motivating and expressing confidence in my endeavors, to emotionally and mentally supporting me, with occasional wise ideas that help to clarify the goals and vision.
Professionally, I’ve always found inspiration from anyone who is successful or striving for success. From reading other’s success stories, I’ve found a way to maintain my beliefs about every possibility of my thought process. So shout to every success story, big or small, it has been a source of motivation for me.
