We had the good fortune of connecting with Nia Crawford and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nia, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risks are a must! The life I live and the life I am building are all due to risk with a foundation based on faith.
Being afraid to take risk will be that factor that determines if one will be limited or limitless. I’ve been testing limits since I was two! If asked to describe my best character traits, risk taker is definitely within the top three.
I have built an amazing business and reputation for myself within my career as a realtor and mentor. It all started with me taking the risk to cut ties with a salary position to dive in full time as a self employed real estate agent. From that decision, that one risk, I have been able to: build a brand, hire a team, educate my clients and community, make a six-figure income and expand my business throughout three states.
My risks have done more than play a role in my life and career, my risks have changed it completely and still are.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I have been a licensed realtor for five, going on six years. Currently, I am licensed in the states of Illinois, Texas and Georgia; being active in each state. My journey has a realtor has been amazing, and just keeps getting better. Not only do I assist others with the sell and purchase of their homes; I am also an investor and investor consultant, as well as a team lead and mentor.
There’s a few things that set me apart from others in my business. I take pride in going over and beyond for my clients. When working with me, everyone is a priority so I make it my duty to create trust, transparency and comfort throughout the process of reaching the end goal. I try to share as much of my journey as possible. So you may have seen footage of me climbing through windows, working extremely late nights, or even working in two different states within the same 24hrs. My passion is real.
Over the course of my real estate career, I’ve crossed some milestones, been acknowledged for different accolades and even had some failures that provided great lessons I have been able to grow from. All of these things stem from me being passionate and dedicated to my goals within my field. When I decided to begin a career in real estate, I had no mentor or anyone to seek advice from. I taught myself many of the ins and outs and grew from mistakes.
My first year in real estate, I worked late nights as a bartender so that I could focus on my passion throughout the day. Considering the fact I left a salary paying job with little to know savings, to dive into a career that was 100% commission based is a risk I’m sure most would call insane, even dumb. I was committed to the hustle of building my dream. Bartending provided enough income to cover my bills, and keep gas in my car to make it to my showings. That’s about it. The fact that business started extremely slow and I was really struggling was my indicator how committed I really was. I have the education and credentials that could have easily landed me a corporate position. It’s not what I wanted. Being dedicated to what I envisioned as my life to be is what has and will get me what I want.
There’s so many tips and advice I can give. The most important advice I can give is to make a plan, stick to the plan, and find a mentor successful in your field! Those are the three biggest hacks to avoid a lot of gray areas along the journey.
I have some great things in store throughout 2023 that I cannot wait to share! I hope those that have been on this journey with me continue to show love and support. It’s never been unnoticed.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One thing is for certain, I’m going to enjoy the fruits of my labor. Yes, work hard but play right after that.
If my friends are coming into the city to visit, I’m making sure they have a ball. We’re going to eat good, enjoy some swanky scenery and hit the spots with the vibes. Houston is full of cool places to go. During the week, I enjoy a good happy hour as a wind down. We would probably do a little shopping in either the Galleria area or Memorial city, then do drinks and food within Galleria or Midtown. Moxies and Lost and Found are two of my favorite places to grab food and drinks. Both offer two completely different vibes but both a great experience.
As far as nightlife, my girls and I don’t always care for too big of a crowd. Lounges are more our speed. Thirteen, and Prospect Park have never let me down. For more of a club vibe Cru and Finish Your Champagne are really dope spots. Newer to the city, and definitely worth checking out.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to recognize my support system, which would be my family. My definition of family isn’t kin, that’s simple genetics. I can proudly say that I am an adult without a village behind me. So to my immediate family, my friends that have become family by choice, my business mentors & work family… THANK YOU!
