We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Laforet and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicole, what makes you happy? Why?
The closer I am to my true self, the happier I am – and my true self loves connecting with people on a deep, spiritual level, as well as creating beautiful magic and art out of plants I grow or forage. I believe that when we do what makes us happy, we light up – and this world needs more people who are lit up to heal our world and each other. Following my joys is one of the main motivators behind my business because I know when I’m doing what lights me up, I’m contributing to the overall healing of the world. My husband has always told me that I can find meaning in everything; I can find meaning in a random puddle on the sidewalk. I love taking the clues hiding within mine or someone’s life and finding the unique healing message that’s hiding within them for us. Whether it be through my tarot cards during a reading, through my dreams, or visits from insects to my garden, the Universe is constantly sending me messages for myself and the people it connects me to. While someone else might see nothing but random, meaningless moments and occurrences, the different pieces fall into place in my head and I can read what the Universe is trying to say. So often we feel alone and lost, left behind by the rest of the world, and so it brings me joy to be able to point out the messages other’s overlook, the little ways the Universe is always with us and guiding our path to healing and joy.
It also makes me so happy to transform things other people overlook or discard. Everything nature gives us has so much potential for transformation, from delicate poppies to tiny apple seeds, and I love finding the magical spirit inside those items and bringing it to life through my herbal creations. I collect all sorts of things I may not know the purpose of until much later — acorn caps, mayfly wings, moss covered sticks — because I know each of the little ingredients, full of divine spirits, will one day go together in the most magical and beautiful way and help someone along their journey.
What should our readers know about your business?
My business, Add Fresh Herbs, began with only tarot and medium readings. From there, it grew to various folk healing practices I offered to my clients. Once they began asking me to create products to assist them with their spiritual pursuits, I never looked back. Presently, I still offer spiritual readings and healings of all kinds, but I also sell intentional sprays, oils, magically infused herbal blends, herbal brooms and wreaths, and more. The list is always growing as I play and explore my creative impulses. There’s a stellar and thriving magical community and market in Houston, but what sets me apart is I’m committed to creating magical items that are primarily, if not entirely, composed of homegrown or self-foraged plants and items. Because my tarot and medium readings began when I committed myself to following the messages I was receiving from the Universe, I always do the same with each of my products — each one has a story, intention, and journey behind it. I’m always focused on how I can inject more spirituality and magic into someone’s everyday life, however busy or modern their life may be. You don’t have to be a “witchy” or “mystical” person to enjoy what I create — you simply have to be open, curious, and playful.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely start each morning off with a walk through the Houston Arboretum – this is the best time to experience the soft morning light filtering through the leaves and hear the quiet rustling of the birds in the trees. That, followed by a leisurely visit to Boomtown Coffee in the Heights for a Milk & Honey latte, sounds like a beautifully slow morning. Other lovely morning visits would include the Rothko Chapel and The Menil Collection in the Montrose neighborhood. Later in the afternoon, we’d tour the marvelously thrilling collections at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston and hit up any of the other museums that strike their fancy within the museum district — you can’t go wrong with any of them, whether it be The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, or the Houston Museum of Natural Science, which as a gorgeous collection of gemstones and petrified wood. They would have to be treated to a stop at my favorite witchy spots in the city: Wormwood & Vine for occult curiosities and magic, and Rosewood Enchantikal Cottage for all of the joyful items a fairy could ever need. Hopefully, their visit falls on a weekend that Macabre Market is going on, because you cannot beat the incredible creators and vendors who show up and show out — you can even get a tattoo when you’re there!
There’s no doubt that Houston has incredible bars and restaurants, but sometimes you want something that you know will be reliably delicious, affordable, and satisfying – and so, I would take them to Teotihuacan Mexican Cafe for incredibly delicious enchiladas, the best dang green sauce in the city, and mouth-watering margaritas the size of a small fishbowl. No one can convince me that they won’t walk out of there satisfied.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be where I am today with my business without the support of Shannon Howard, co-owner of the Houston occult boutique, Wormwood and Vine. She was the first person to hire me as a tarot reader for her shop, and from there I was able to connect with many of the same clients I read for today, as well as other magical Houston creatives and artists. More than that, Shannon has given me so much confidence to pursue my spiritual gifts and show up in the world exactly as I am.
